Pakistan and Bangladesh signed a historic agreement today. The agreement aims to step up their efforts to combat drug trafficking. The agreement, signed by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, marks a significant development in bilateral relations between the two countries.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), both countries have pledged to collaborate fully in preventing the illegal movement and smuggling of narcotics. A joint working group, comprising secretary-level officials from their respective Interior Ministries, will be established to oversee these efforts.
The agreement outlines a comprehensive strategy to eradicate the burgeoning drug menace and mitigate its adverse effects on society. This includes developing a unified strategy to halt the unlawful sale of drugs and dismantle their distribution networks.
Intelligence sharing will be a cornerstone of the initiative, with relevant agencies from both countries exchanging timely information about drug traffickers and their operations. In addition, Pakistan and Bangladesh will share best practices, cutting-edge technology, and personnel training programmes to effectively combat the drug trade.
During the signing ceremony, Minister Naqvi extended full support to his Bangladeshi counterpart regarding the Safe City Project, assuring cooperation in all aspects. The ministers also discussed enhancing collaboration in internal security and the training of civil armed forces.
Further discussions encompassed joint measures to counteract terrorism and improve mutual cooperation in addressing cybercrimes, organised crime, and financial frauds. The two sides also deliberated on cooperative training programmes for law enforcement officers at police academies.
Minister Naqvi extended an invitation to Minister Ahmed to visit Pakistan, underscoring the spirit of cooperation and goodwill. Minister Ahmed expressed gratitude for Pakistan”s offer of assistance with the Safe City Project, highlighting the mutual commitment to shared security goals.
