Pakistan, EU Reaffirm Their Commitment to Regional Peace

Pakistan and the European Union reiterated their commitment to regional peace, called for dialogue to resolve issues with Afghanistan while welcoming a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict.

According to a statement issued today This consensus was a key outcome of the 7th Round of the EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired by Pakistan”s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the EU”s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in the Belgian capital.

Addressing the situation with their neighbour, the two sides called on Afghanistan”s de facto authorities to play a constructive part in achieving the shared objective of eliminating terrorism from Afghan soil. They expressed concern over the country”s deteriorating socio-economic conditions, supporting a peaceful and self-reliant Afghanistan that contributes to regional stability.

Regarding the Middle East, the leaders discussed the ongoing situation and welcomed the agreement reached on the first phase of a plan to end the Gaza conflict, which was put forward by President Donald Trump.

The dialogue also underscored a strong political commitment to the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP+), which remains a critical element of EU-Pakistan relations. Both parties reiterated the importance of continued collaboration to promote sustainable growth and trade development.

The meeting reviewed cooperation under the framework of the 2019 EU-Pakistan Strategic Engagement Plan. Both sides agreed to further deepen their partnership in all areas covered by the plan, with the objective of aligning their overall strategic outlook.

This enhanced cooperation includes furthering knowledge partnerships through programs such as Erasmus Mundus and Horizon Europe, and working together on emerging challenges related to food and energy security and climate change.

In line with their international obligations, both parties reaffirmed their pledge to continue working closely towards the universal promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

It was agreed that the 8th Round of the Strategic Dialogue will be convened in Islamabad.
