Pakistan and Russia are set to activate a framework for commodity exchange cooperation, following a high-level meeting between Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Dmitriy Chernyshev, Vice President of the Saint Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX), held at the Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday.
The talks focused on implementing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SPIMEX and the Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) to foster technical collaboration, digital integration, and information sharing across trading platforms. The agreement is expected to facilitate the trading of key commodities including oil, wheat, and fertilizers from Russia, and rice, cotton, and fresh produce from Pakistan.
The initiative marks a strategic shift towards structured trade amid persistent banking hurdles that have historically limited direct transactions between the two countries. ‘We remain committed to strengthening trade ties with Russia despite global challenges,’ Minister Khan said, noting that bilateral trade stood at US$ 963 million in FY 2023-24, with Pakistan’s exports at US$ 83 million and imports at US$ 880 million.
Introducing SPIMEX as Russia’s leading commodity exchange, Mr. Chernyshev highlighted its role in providing transparent pricing and facilitating trade in petroleum products, gas, fertilizers, and timber. He also shared plans for an international network of commodity exchanges to streamline cross-border trade.
The SPIMEX delegation, visiting Pakistan from April 21-25, is also engaging with local stakeholders across the trade, banking, and logistics sectors to explore long-term, sustainable trade mechanisms in response to shifting global economic conditions.
With institutional support now aligning on both sides, officials anticipate increased trade volumes and more efficient commodity flows. Future engagements are expected to focus on the operationalization of agreed mechanisms and expansion into new sectors.
