Pakistan has unveiled an audacious plan to catapult its buffalo meat exports to Malaysia from a mere $38,000 to an ambitious $200 million within the next five years, a move officials are hailing as a potential game changer for the nation’s halal industry.
The comprehensive business strategy was approved on Friday during a high-level meeting co-chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan and Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain and Jam Kamal Khan. The session included senior government officials, private sector stakeholders, and technical consultants.
Haroon Akhtar Khan lauded the initiative, developed under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as a major breakthrough. “An efficient business framework for meat exports has been developed. This business plan is a game changer,” he stated, commending the outstanding work of all involved ministries and committee members.
Echoing this sentiment, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan emphasized that the package represents “collective efforts and consensus among all concerned sectors,” signaling unified support for the export enhancement program.
The committee identified significant obstacles that have previously stifled export growth, including the prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease, deficiencies in processing capabilities, and various logistical constraints.
To counter these challenges, the government announced a series of key reforms. Haroon Akhtar Khan confirmed that the halal meat sector would be granted industry status, a step designed to bolster economic performance and facilitate increased overseas shipments. A detailed implementation roadmap with clear responsibilities and timelines has been formulated.
Financial facilitation was highlighted as a cornerstone of the strategy. “The banking sector, federal and provincial governments, and the State Bank of Pakistan will provide key support to reduce export costs and introduce incentives,” Jam Kamal Khan noted.
Furthermore, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain announced that modern slaughterhouses would be established in compliance with Malaysian standards, ensuring the quality and acceptability of Pakistani products in the international market.
Concluding the meeting, Haroon Akhtar Khan expressed strong confidence in the plan’s success, asserting, “These incentives will enable Pakistani halal beef to successfully reach the global market.”
