Pakistan is intensifying its efforts to align its human rights framework with global standards, including crucial GSP+ compliance requirements, through an expanded partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Union (EU), a high-level meeting confirmed on Wednesday.
The renewed collaboration was the focus of discussions when the Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, met with the UNDP Resident Representative in Pakistan, Mr. Samuel Rizk. The dialogue centered on bolstering institutional and legislative reforms under the Huqooq-e-Pakistan II project.
During the meeting, which included UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Ms. Van Nguyen, Minister Tarar expressed appreciation for the sustained support from the international partners. He highlighted that the project demonstrates the government’s firm resolve to elevate domestic human rights practices in line with Pakistan’s constitutional duties and international treaties.
The joint initiative will concentrate on four primary areas: reinforcing national human rights institutions, enhancing government structures, integrating human rights education into universities, and advancing the business and human rights agenda according to UN Guiding Principles.
The UNDP delegation briefed the minister on significant technical advancements, including the upgrade of the Human Rights Information Management System (HRIMS). Officials also detailed work to fortify the National Mechanism for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (NMIRF), which is vital for ensuring Pakistan meets its international treaty obligations effectively.
A key component of the project involves strengthening the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP-BHR). This aims to foster responsible business conduct, gender equality, and sustainability within the private sector and will be supported by the development of a new Human Rights Due Diligence Framework.
Senator Tarar reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing human rights through comprehensive policy changes, institutional capacity building, and public awareness campaigns.
The minister underscored Pakistan’s determination to cultivate a more inclusive and equitable society, pledging to deepen the partnership with the UNDP and EU to promote human rights and sustainable development across the nation.
