Pakistan has issued a stark warning that the wider Middle East is at a ‘perilous crossroads’ following recent strikes on Iran, calling for an immediate and complete cessation of hostilities and a return to dialogue to de-escalate mounting regional tensions.
According to a report today, the call was made by Pakistan”s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, while speaking at a UN Security Council high-level briefing on ‘Cooperation between the UN and Regional and Sub-regional Organizations: The League of Arab States.”
Ambassador Ahmad highlighted the severe security situation, noting that Gulf members of the Arab League are facing direct attacks on their territory while simultaneously confronting challenges associated with restricted navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
In his address, the Pakistani envoy advocated for stronger and mutually reinforcing cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States (LAS) to tackle the escalating crises throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
He stressed that achieving durable peace necessitates coordinated, inclusive and regionally anchored responses that are firmly grounded in the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
