Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik today issued a stark warning to the international community on Tuesday, urging nations to oppose the ‘weaponization of water’ and cautioning that a dangerous precedent could place all lower riparian countries at risk.
Addressing a conference in the nation”s capital, the minister articulated the potential danger if upstream nations are permitted to control the flow of vital water resources to their downstream neighbors.
Mr. Malik stated that if such a precedent is established, it would create a significant threat to every nation situated further down a shared river system.
In his address, the climate change official also provided a detailed account of the severe devastation Pakistan has suffered from catastrophic flooding in recent years, connecting the call for international water security to the country”s own climate-related challenges.
