Patients compelled to drink polluted water at Karachi hospitals

Karachi:The underground water reservoirs and overhead tanks of government hospitals in Karachi are not being cleaned on regular basis; therefore, visiting and admitted patients have been compelled to drink contaminated water, it is learnt on Thursday.

An official at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), told PPI that, the underground water reservoirs of this health facility was not being maintained or cleaned on regular basis by the hospital administration. The visiting and admitted patients have been compelled to drink health hazardous polluted water.

He said more than 5,000 patients from Karachi, interior Sindh and Balochistan province visit different OPDs of hospital every day. The visiting patients and their attendants have been forced to drink polluted water of dirty underground water reservoir, while some patients and their attendants used mineral water to avoid water-borne diseases. This contaminated water is also supplied to various departments of the hospital and staff colony.

The official said the consumption of contaminated and polluted water could develop water-borne diseases among patients and their attendants. He said people have been compelled to purchase mineral water from medical stores for daily consummation.

Similarly, the overhead tanks and underground reservoirs of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Jinnah Hospital Karachi and others hospitals of the city were also not being maintained or cleaned since past several months due to slackness of heads of healthcare centers. Medical Superintendent, Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, Dr Noor Soomro, was not available for comments.
