Widespread civil unrest and violent demonstrations in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly the Skardu region, have prompted a strong condemnation from President Asif Ali Zardari, who noted the severe disruption to public life and extensive damage to property.
In a statement today, the President acknowledged that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it must be conducted within the bounds of the law.
President Zardari censured what he described as the “wanton destruction” of infrastructure, specifically highlighting the damage inflicted upon public buildings, educational establishments, and the offices of both non-governmental and international organisations.
He firmly stated that such actions are unlawful, constitute “serious criminal conduct” under applicable statutes, and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
The President issued an appeal to all stakeholders to exercise restraint and refrain from any actions that could further escalate tensions.
He emphasised that stability and adherence to the rule of law are paramount for safeguarding national interests and maintaining public confidence.
