President Asif Ali Zardari, in a message marking St. Patrick’s Day, today drew a sharp contrast between global festivities and the profound suffering in West Asia, highlighting the “death, destruction and devastation” inflicted by an imposed war on hundreds of thousands of families.
While extending warm felicitations to Ireland, the President noted that beyond the celebrations, the world is marked by sorrow. He pointed specifically to the conflict in West Asia where homes, workplaces, and agricultural lands have been destroyed.
Drawing a parallel with the historical figure at the centre of the celebrations, President Zardari observed that the story of Saint Patrick is one of transformation and reconciliation. He emphasised that the saint, having known “incarceration and hardships,” returned with a message of forgiveness and hope rather than revenge.
In what he described as “troubling times,” the President asserted that Saint Patrick”s legacy suggests “the true test of humanity is not how fiercely we fight, but how courageously we pursue peace.” He called for the day to inspire a renewed commitment to compassion, dialogue, diplomacy, and the dignity of every human life.
The President also reaffirmed the strong relationship between Pakistan and Ireland, stating that the ties are built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to multilateralism and peace.
In his message to Irish President Catherine Connolly and the people of Ireland, he expressed confidence that the friendship between the two nations would continue to grow, conveying his best wishes for a joyous St. Patrick’s Day.
