Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday inaugurated an electric bus service in five districts, marking the latest expansion of the province’s public transport network as authorities aim to deploy 5,000 electric buses over the next five years.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister said the initial phase of the project had been launched in Layyah, Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara and Murree. She added that electric buses would gradually be introduced across all cities and tehsils of Punjab.
Maryam described the initiative as Pakistan’s largest public transportation programme, noting that Murree was receiving an electric bus service for the first time.
She said an additional 101 electric buses were being dispatched to other districts, underscoring the government’s commitment to expanding environmentally friendly and modern transit facilities throughout the province.
According to the chief minister, the electric bus network would provide residents with safe, comfortable and economical travel options. She said the provincial government had also introduced fare concessions for senior citizens, women and students.
Maryam added that the Punjab government would continue to enhance transport infrastructure and provide improved commuting facilities to people across the province in the coming years.
