A suspect who allegedly snatched mobile phones from citizens near Boat Basin Block 2 today was killed a short while later in an armed encounter with Boat Basin police, and his accomplice was arrested.
According to a statement issued by SSP District South Police, the clash began when the suspects were trying to escape and the police arrived at the scene. The suspects opened fire on the police party, which was retaliated.
In the exchange of fire, one suspect was killed on the spot, while his accomplice was safely taken into custody.
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of weapons and ammunition from the possession of both the deceased and the arrested suspects.
Initial reports indicate that both individuals belong to the notorious “Rickshaw Gang,” which is allegedly involved in multiple incidents of street crime in different parts of the city.
Police are processing the formal identification of the deceased and arrested suspect. Further legal proceedings regarding the incident have been initiated.
