Aligarh, June 15, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has arrested a Rohingya Muslim from Aligarh. Khalique Ahmed, an Imam in Rashideen mosque in Aligarh, was arrested on charges of residing on forged Indian documents. ADG, ATS, Naveen Arora said to IANS news agency that the preliminary investigation revealed that Khalique had gone to Jammu after the campaign against Rohingya citizens living in Uttar Pradesh intensified.
Arora also said that Khalique had taught in madrasas of Deoband, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar. Many human rights groups have flagged India’s apathy toward Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar to escape the violent military crackdown.
An estimated 40,000 Rohingya are in India, at least 20,000 of whom are registered with UNHCR.
Since 2016, ultranationalist Hindu groups have targeted Rohingya refugees in India as part of growing attacks on Muslims in India and called for their expulsion from the country. Since October 2018, the Indian government has deported 12 Rohingya to Myanmar, claiming that they left voluntarily.
