On the occasion of SAARC Charter Day, the leadership of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) today issued a powerful call for member states to reinvigorate regional cooperation, stressing the urgent need for a coordinated economic recovery as South Asian nations confront financial pressures, climate-related vulnerabilities, and global market disruptions.
In a statement marking the event, SCCI President Mr. Md. Jashim Uddin noted that while the SAARC Charter”s founding principles remain a strong foundation for progress, the region”s extraordinary potential can only be unlocked through renewed trust and collaboration. He described the Charter as a vital reminder of South Asia’s collective commitment to peace, prosperity, and meaningful regional partnership.
The President specifically called for the reaffirmation and strengthening of the mandated status of SAARC’s Apex and Recognized Bodies. He argued that empowering this network is essential for driving cross-border trade, stimulating private-sector engagement, and accelerating the region’s economic momentum. “A more empowered network of Apex Bodies is essential for revitalizing the SAARC process,” Mr. Jashim Uddin stated.
Supporting the President’s message, SCCI Vice Presidents from across the region offered their perspectives.
Mr. Mian Anjum Nisar of Pakistan underscored the need to restore economic confidence through improved trade facilitation, smoother business mobility, and regulatory alignment, affirming his country”s commitment to fostering private-sector collaboration.
From Nepal, Mr. Chandi Raj Dhakal called for advancing initiatives in connectivity, tourism, investment, and digital integration to build a more resilient and interconnected regional economy.
Dr. Rohitha Silva of Sri Lanka highlighted the pressing need for coordinated action as member states navigate severe economic challenges, endorsing a stronger role for the SCCI in bridging regional economies and promoting long-term stability.
Mr. Khairuddin Mayel from Afghanistan stressed that sustained dialogue and strengthened economic partnership are vital for realizing South Asia’s vast shared potential.
Representing the Maldives, Dr. Mariyam Shakeel emphasized that mutual trust is key to achieving sustainable growth and reaffirmed her nation”s support for revitalizing SAARC’s economic agenda.
SCCI Secretary General, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Butt, concluded with an optimistic outlook, expressing his belief that the vision of South Asian unity can be achieved through mutual trust and a renewed dedication to the principles celebrated on SAARC Charter Day.
