The Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences concluded its 5th Annual Biological Sciences Conference, spotlighting groundbreaking advancements in drug delivery systems, cancer research, and gene therapy.

According to AKU information today, the event, under the banner of ‘Innovation, Translation, and Impact,’ attracted a diverse cohort of researchers, academics, students, and collaborators, all eager to explore research that addresses Pakistan’s pressing health and development issues.

The gathering underscored the pivotal role of scientific innovation in not only enhancing health outcomes but also in contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those concerning health, education, and gender equality. Participants engaged in discussions on cutting-edge approaches in drug delivery, cellular engineering, and gene therapy, emphasizing the transformative potential of these fields.

Dr. Kulsoom Ghias, Chair of the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, invoked the vision of AKU’s Founder, His late Highness the Aga Khan IV, emphasizing the significance of research in improving human lives. She paid homage to Dr. Camer Vellani, reinforcing the idea of building upon the legacy of pioneering figures in science and education.

Dr. Karim Damji, Dean of AKU’s Medical College in Pakistan, highlighted the necessity of a robust foundation in basic sciences to tackle complex medical challenges. He encouraged students to engage in the cycle of consuming, producing, sharing, and translating knowledge to maximize the impact of science.

The conference also featured skill-enhancing workshops aimed at nurturing the next wave of scientific minds. Attendees gained proficiency in health data analysis using SPSS and R, explored Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for literature mapping, and received hands-on training with CRISPR/Cas9 Genome Editing technology.

Zia Akhtar Abbas, CEO of The Citizens Foundation (TCF) and the event”s chief guest, lauded AKU’s dedication to research and its role in developing future scientific leaders. Both AKU and TCF envision expanding access to knowledge and fostering societal progress through education and innovation.
