Scores of IOK 2014 flood victims yet to receive aid

Srinagar, September 07, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, scores of victims of 2014 devastating flood, despite several assurances and promises, have not received the financial aid announced by the government of India under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund in 2015. Several victims who spoke to media persons said that they had taken loans from banks for reconstruction or repair of their flood-hit homes and shops after the authorities’ assurance that they would be provided financial aid.

Devastating floods hit Kashmir on September 7, 2014, after embankments of the river Jhelum breached at multiple places. Ansar Ahmed Mir from Sonwar, whose residential house was severely damaged, said that his file was readied for compensation in the deputy commissioner’s office in 2015. “There has been no progress on my case since then. I visit the authorities concerned every week to know the status of my case. I am yet to receive the assistance,” he said.

Abdul Majeed Butt and Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Lone of Shivpora, Srinagar, said that they had been visiting authorities concerned for the past three years to get their compensation. “We were many times asked to submit our 16-digit bank account numbers in the tehsil offices concerned, but not a penny has been transferred so far,” they said.
