Shazia Marri Warns Climate Crisis Demands Unity

Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians Central Information Secretary Shazia Marri warned today that no political force can control the weather and urged collective action as relentless monsoon downpours in Karachi and Sindh exposed the escalating threats posed by climate change.

She said recent heavy showers underscored that natural calamities cannot be stopped, but their fallout can be reduced through advance preparation and sound planning. Marri emphasized that voters mandated the Pakistan Peoples Party to serve Karachi and the wider Sindh province, adding that the party has ‘always stood with the people in difficult times, and will continue to do so.’

Detailing the response, she noted that President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari remained in constant contact with the administration during the rain emergency, while the Sindh Chief Minister personally monitored drainage operations in the metropolis.

According to her, sewerage cleaning and repair began months ahead of the monsoon, which helped avert a deeper crisis. She praised Mayor Murtaza Wahab as ‘working tirelessly day and night during the rains,’ asserting that without these preparations ‘the situation could have been far more disastrous.’

Acknowledging citizens’ hardships, Marri said the provincial authorities are extending every possible form of assistance. She criticized rival groups for ‘engaging in criticism’ and ‘restricting themselves to mere statements’ despite being, in her words, ‘rejected by the people.’

She maintained that all available resources and personnel were mobilized for public safety and relief efforts. ‘Even developed cities across the world go underwater in such heavy rains. Yet in Karachi, water was drained almost immediately after the rain stopped,’ she claimed.

Marri urged news outlets to highlight not only ongoing challenges but also neighborhoods already cleared and dewatered so residents can see tangible progress.

Reaffirming her party’s stance, she concluded that the Pakistan Peoples Party will continue serving the people of Sindh and Karachi with full dedication.
