Shehla presents excellence awards to women working in various departments

KARACHI:Sindh Provincial Minister for Women’s Development Syeda Shehla Raza on Wednesday presented excellence awards to women who showed courage and leadership skills while working in police, judiciary, law, bar, prosecution, anti-narcotics, literacy, child protection authority, formal education, women’s development, social welfare and other government departments.

Addressing an awards distribution ceremony at a local hotel organized in association with the Legal Rights Forum, she said without the participation of women, no movement would be possible. “Police force is small but despite this, peace in the city is the result of the efforts and sacrifices of the police for which they deserve salute,” she observed.

Secretary Women’s Development Sindh Anjum Iqbal Jumani, senior officers of the police department and people from other departments were present in large numbers on the occasion. Shehla said that taking advantage of the presence of such a large number of police in today’s function, some mistakes of the police should also be pointed out so that further improvement could be achieved.

She said that many years had passed since most of the domestic laws were enacted but the people concerned were not aware of them and they themselves admitted this. She said that when women turn to the police stations in a state of violence, tricks were used and instead of registering their cases immediately, they were urged to seek counseling, which was a wrong practice.

She said that most of the issues are not resolved at the police station level unless they are raised at the highest level. In particular, in cases of domestic disputes, incorrect clauses are added which do not provide full justice to the plaintiff. “Justice makes its own way, so we must register the right cases in the light of the law,” he said.

She said it would be more appropriate if the women police and the women’s development department were also informed before registering a case related to domestic disputes. She said that they were a family and it was necessary for the people of the family to come together to eradicate many evils or wrong traditions. She also assured to take up the issue of promotions in the police department raised by the police officers with the Sindh Chief Minister.
