In a high-level meeting with a World Bank delegation today, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stressed the need for more timely assistance to ensure the on-schedule completion of the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, while also seeking the international lender”s backing for two new major railway initiatives.
The Senior Minister identified the Karachi Circular Railway and the Karachi-Sukkur high-speed train as key priorities for the provincial administration. He described these undertakings as potential “game changers” for Sindh and urged the financial institution to take an active role in moving them forward.
Memon, who also serves as the provincial minister for information, transport, and mass transit, briefed the delegation on the progress of the Yellow Line BRT, which is being developed with World Bank support. He noted that work on one section, the Taj Haider Bridge, has been finished and the remaining construction is progressing quickly.
He added that decisions regarding the Yellow Line are being made with the public interest in mind and reiterated the Sindh government”s commitment to providing affordable and efficient travel options.
The minister also highlighted the provincial authority”s successful management of the Green Line BRT, which was handed over by the federal government. He stated that daily ridership under Sindh”s management has increased by 33,000.
Memon pointed out that Karachi still requires more buses to improve urban mobility and that the World Bank”s cooperation would be valuable not only for current projects but also for future transport plans.
The World Bank delegation praised the province’s transport initiatives and asked the Senior Minister to support railway projects as well. The delegates noted that Karachi is a major city in the region and holds a strategic location for providing access to Central Asia.
