KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Women’s Rights Syeda Shehla Raza has said that the Sindh government is working for the betterment of not only the general public but also the children and women in jails. After their release from prisons, they have been taught ways to have a better job and live a dignified life in the future and have been successfully trained in various disciplines.
She expressed these views while addressing a seminar on “Consultation on Social and Economic Rehabilitation Support of Young People in Prisons and Under Probation in Sindh” organized by Sindh Government and SPARC at a local hotel. She said that they had also conducted courses for children and women in prisons based on certificates of skills in various disciplines including sewing, henna, beauty parlors, graphics designing, primary education certificates, computer courses, gaming zones and others.
She said that the main objective of these courses was to provide better training to the people who had been released after serving their sentence for any crime so that they can go to the society and earn better employment based on the knowledge learned instead of getting involved in more crimes.
“We have also had encouraging discussions with the industrialists to play their role in providing employment to such skilled people,” she said. Participants in the seminar discussed further legislation regarding inmates in jails, especially children and women, and made various suggestions.
The seminar was also attended by Sindh Chief Minister’s Advisor Syed Riaz Hussain Shah, DIG Women Sheeba Shah, DIG Karachi Jail Nasir Khan, CMO Women Dr Hamira Rasool, Project Manager SPARC Ms Shumaila and others.
