Doctors at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital today performed a groundbreaking surgery, successfully removing a life-threatening tumor from the eye of a three-day-old newborn. The newborn, from a village in Jhelum, was quickly brought to the hospital due to a rapidly growing tumor in one of its eyes.
After immediate examination, the medical team determined that an urgent operation was necessary to save the child’s life. This complex three-hour surgery was performed by a team of specialists, including Dr. Tayyab Afghani, Dr. Faizan Tahir, Dr. Ali Raza Syed, and Dr. Aiman. Astonishingly, the tumor weighed 285 grams, which was significantly more than the normal three grams weight of a healthy newborn’s eye.
This is the first time in Pakistan that a successful surgery of a congenital eye tumor in a newborn has been performed. Dr. Tayyab Afghani confirmed the success of the operation and mentioned that the child is recovering rapidly. He emphasized the rarity of eye tumors in newborns and highlighted the importance of immediate diagnosis and treatment, which significantly improves survival chances.
Dr. Afghani advised that any abnormality in a newborn’s eye, such as unusual swelling or structural irregularity, requires immediate medical examination. This ensures timely diagnosis and can save a life.
Post-recovery, plans are underway for fitting a specially designed artificial eye for the child, which will support natural facial growth and shape, allowing the child to lead a normal life.
