The Supreme Court of Pakistan has exonerated the individuals accused in the 2014 homicide of Sindh High Court Justice Khalid Shahani’s son, citing inadequate investigative work and prosecution. The highest court annulled the rulings of the trial court and the Sindh High Court, which had previously imposed capital punishment on Sikandar Lashari and a 25-year prison term on Irfan alias Faheem.
Justice Athar Minallah delivered the concise order, with a comprehensive judgment expected later. The court determined that the defendants’ convictions could not be upheld due to substandard investigative procedures and a frail prosecution case.
The initial trial court had condemned Lashari to death and sentenced Faheem to 25 years behind bars for the killing of Haneen Tariq, Justice Shahani’s son, in 2014.
