Sutlej River Flood Alert Issued As Water Levels Rises

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today issued a flood alert for the Sutlej River, warning of rapidly increasing water levels due to heavy monsoon rains and upstream flows.

The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) reported a significant jump in discharge at Ganda Singh Wala, raising concerns about potential flooding in low-lying regions. Intense monsoon activity and a persistent weather system are bringing widespread heavy rainfall across northern and central Pakistan. This precipitation is expected to intensify over the next few days, further swelling the Sutlej and Beas rivers. The sharp rise in the Sutlej”s flow, recorded at Ganda Singh Wala, signals a concerning trend.

The substantial rainfall predicted for the coming days in the river”s catchment areas, including parts of India, is likely to exacerbate the situation. Water releases from Pong Dam are also adding to the rising water levels. With Bhakra and Pong Dams already at more than half their capacity, further releases are anticipated, potentially pushing the Sutlej to flood levels at Ganda Singh Wala this week.

Communities residing near the river, canals, and other waterways are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. Wading into floodwaters should be strictly avoided due to the risk of rapidly changing conditions and hidden dangers.

Local administrations have been instructed to prepare emergency response measures, clear drainage networks, and be ready for potential evacuations. Residents in vulnerable locations should secure their belongings, livestock, and essential household items as a precaution.

The NDMA is continuously observing the situation through its NEOC and coordinating with regional and local officials. The public is advised to remain informed through official announcements, news reports, and the NDMA”s disaster alert application for up-to-date information and safety instructions.
