Srinagar, August 31, 2022 (PPI-OT):Veteran Hurriyat leader and the icon of freedom movement in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Syed Ali Gilani, always advocated settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the Kashmiris’ aspirations.
Syed Ali Gilani championed the cause of right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir throughout his life. In many of his speeches and addresses, he had maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory under the UN resolutions and the Kashmiris must be allowed to decide whether they want to live with India or accede to Pakistan. He was of the strong opinion that the Kashmiris were not demanding separation from India but wanted liberation of Jammu and Kashmir which had never been a part of India.
The veteran leader held the view that the Kashmir dispute must be resolved by giving all the people of Jammu and Kashmir – irrespective of their cast, creed and religion – an opportunity to decide their fate by themselves in a UN-supervised plebiscite as recommended by the World Body through its several resolutions.
Syed Ali Gilani had always asked the Kashmiri people to maintain unity among their ranks to take the ongoing freedom movement to its logical conclusion in a more effective manner.
