ATC awards 32-year imprisonment to accused in kidnapping case

Karachi:An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday awarded a 32-year imprisonment to an accused, Mumtaz Ali, in a case pertaining to the kidnapping for ransom of two citizens from Wagan area of Larkana.

 

The ATC was hearing the case against the accused and announced the verdict of the case in the light of evidence. The court also sentenced four absconding accused to a 10-year imprisonment each. It imposed a fine of Rs0.2 million on all the culprits. The fugitive accused are Gul Bahadur Mugheri, Sikandar, Fauji Mugheri and Masti Mugheri.

 

The accused had abducted two citizens Mashooq and Mehtab from Wagon road in Larkana on February 8, 2011. They had demanded a ransom of Rs1 million from the families of the abducted citizens.

 

The court did not find any evidence of ransom demand from the families of the accused. Therefore, only the case of kidnapping against the accused was proved by the court. The case was transferred from ATC Court Larkana to Karachi on August 21, 2017 on the order of Sindh High Court.

 

(Court): Baldia factory fire case: ATC awards death sentence to two, life imprisonment to four

Karachi:Eight years after the horrifying deadly incident that shocked whole the country, the anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday announced its verdict on Baldia factory fire, awarding death sentence to two accused Rehman alias Bhola and Zubair alias Charya and life imprisonment to three gatekeepers of the factory, Fazal Mehmood, Arshad Mehmood, and Ali Mohammad, and a manager, Shahrukh.

However, the court acquitted four other accused including Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Rauf Siddiqui, Adeeb Khanum, Abdul Sattar and Ali Hassan Qadri over the lack of evidence against them. The court declared two other accused former in-charge of MQM’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui and Ali Hassan Qadri as proclaimed offenders for their perpetual absence from the trial proceedings.

The police brought two accused persons including Rehman alias Bhola and Zubair alias Charya before the ATC while Rauf Siddiqui also arrived in the court. The police made strict security arrangements around the court building and closed the entry of unauthorized persons in the it.

Earlier, the court was expected to announce its verdict in the Baldia factory fire case on September 7, but it was postponed till September 22 (today) due to some reasons. On September 11, 2012, over 259 workers of factory, Ali Enterprises, were burnt alive in Karachi’s Baldia Town. The factory is located on Hub River Road and belongs to Abdul Aziz Bhalia and his two sons, Rashid Aziz and Shahid Aziz.

The factory owners had claimed that MQM leaders had warned of setting ablaze factory after they refused to pay Rs 25 crore ransom to MQM. Key accused of the case, Rehman Bhola, was brought from Bangkok with the help of Interpol. The accused had confessed to setting ablaze the factory.

(Court): ATC acquits five accused in two policemen’s murder case

Karachi:An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Monday acquitted five accused in targeted killing case of two police officers, Station House Officer (SHO) Nasirul Hassan and Constable Khurram Butt.

The ATC court heard a case against five accused Ubaid K2, Ishtiaq Police-wala, Khawaja Faisal, Shakir and Zakir Hussain and it acquitted them after tribunal failed to prove charges against them in two police officers murder case.

According to the lawyers, there were contradictions in the statement of eyewitnesses, and the police failed to produce substantial evidence to prove charges against the accused. The counsel of the accused persons argued that no single evidence was produced against his clients.

It may be noted that two motor bikers had gunned down SHO Brigade police station Nasirul Hassan and his guard, head Constable Khurram Butt, in Brigade area in July 2010. The case was registered at Brigade police station. According to the police, two policemen had completed a round of snap checking and were on their way back to the police station when they were killed.

(Court): ATC delays verdict in Baldia factory fire case

Karachi:An anti-terrorism court on Thursday delayed its verdict in the Baldia factory fire case till September 22 which was expected to be announced today (17 September).

An anti-terrorism court (ATC-VII) heard the petition at the judicial complex inside Karachi Central Jail. The court adjourned the hearing after the state prosecutor submitted further documents.

The petition was filed by two accused in the case, Ali Hassan Qadri and Dr Abdul Sattar Khan, to delay the verdict of the case. They said that they wanted time to prove that they received Rs50 million compensation for the victims from the factory owners, and they also presented records from the Sindh finance department.

They said that they had business connection with the Baldia brothers because of which the money was transferred to them. The public prosecutor submitted to the court the list of victims who received compensation from the government and a foreign buyer of Ali Enterprises’ products.

On 11 September 2012, over 260 workers were burnt alive in a multi-storey Ali Enterprises garment factory in Karachi’s Baldia Town. The factory, Ali Enterprises, is located on Hub River Road and belongs to Abdul Aziz Bhaila and his two sons, Rashid Aziz and Shahid Aziz.

According to the case, nine people affiliated with the MQM, including Rehman Bhola, a former sector in-charge, and Zubair alias Charya, have been charged with setting the garment factory on fire after the factory owners refused to pay them Rs200 million as ‘protection’ money’.

Bhola has been accused of throwing a chemical at the factory and setting it on fire on the instructions of the former chief of the MQM’s Karachi Tanzeemi Committee, Hammad Siddiqui, according to the report of the third JIT formed in the case. The Sindh government has made the report public.
