Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry proposed to set up a ‘Mineral Development Bank’

Lahore, September 11, 2020 (PPI-OT): Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry has proposed to set up a “Mineral Development Bank” supported to explore potential of marble and granite sector at optimal level. Mr. Zarak Khan, President PCJCCI proposed this idea while addressing the think tank session held here today to review ways and means to resolve the issues confronting by the marble industry. He said that, Pakistan is the 6th largest mineral extractor of marble and granite and has a place on world mining map.

Pakistan has enormous potential to promote exports of marble products as it possess huge marble and granite reserves of around 400 million tones and 65 varieties of marble and granite stones. He further added that, currently global market for marble and granite is estimated at around US 62 billion dollars but Pakistan’s share is below one percent which should serve as a conduit of prosperity and it is a cause of concern for the policymakers.

Mr. Zarak Khan said that China is the major importer of marble of Pakistan with a share of almost 85 percent. China is enthusiastically interested in local marbles and establishing joint ventures with Pakistan’s marble exporters but has been demoralized due to some security reasons and deteriorating law and order situation.

President PCJCCI said that marble industry has the potential to become backbone of the economy and promote more exports than the share of textile products in case the government extend required support. He urged the government to address the marble industry issues on priority basis, whose exports can well go up to over US 200 million dollars per year.

He suggested that the government should open a mineral development bank for the marble and stone sector. The high electricity cost, use of obsolete mining techniques, lack of financing facility, and processing units, law and order issues in major mining areas, inconsistent power supply, insufficient infrastructure from mines to ports, lack of value addition, improper transportation facilities and supply chain problems are the major hurdles holding back this industry from full growth potential.

Mr. Moazzam Ghurki, stressed upon the need for public-private sector partnership for the development in this sector. He suggested taking marble industrialists on board in the policymaking process to frame such policies that could boost the industry. The government must improve the power infrastructure, water, sewage and road networks. It should also ensure soft loans to the potential investors to enable them get modern quarrying machinery. It should also help to establish training centers for workforce and a safe and healthy environment, he added.

Mr. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI said that the conventional method of blasting should be changed with the modern and latest machinery on rental basis for extracting marble. The standard wastage in the world is 45 percent for the marble sector but in Pakistan 85 percent marble is destroyed due to the blasting technique. With the use of technology and innovation we can even utilize the marble powder for building blocks.

PCJCCI suggested “Energy Democracy” to overcome the crisis of Electricity

Lahore, September 03, 2020 (PPI-OT): Mr. Zarak Khan President Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has proposed the concept of “Energy Democracy” in the country, which can be implemented by creating Private-Public Partnership’s Consortiums to overcome the exceeding energy crisis in Pakistan. The concept was discussed today at a meeting of PCJCCI’s Think Tank” in participation with Mr. Moazzam Ghurki, Senior Vice President, Mr. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General and a number of the Executive Members.

The President PCJCCI hoped that, introducing energy democracy in Pakistan, the government can ensure efficiency, investment, and reduced tariffs to resolve energy crisis. He said that Pakistan can conduct participatory forms of decision enabling people to get involved in the energy democracy projects to ensure public ownership also in distribution of energy.

He informed that World had built 45,000 large dams so far while Pakistan had built only two large dams with 7% of world’s irrigated area, which shows the criminal neglect in safeguarding the life-giving waters. He said that currently China’s installed capacity of electricity generation is among the highest i.e. 1,260 million GW, whereas Pakistan has an installed capacity of 22, 143 MW but it produces only 11,000 MW due to line losses, delayed payments, line rents and poor maintenance of the Hydro machinery.

On this occasion, Mr. Moazzam Ghurki, Senior Vice President PCJCCI pointed out that if Pakistan is to develop at a faster pace to attain 7 to 8 percent GDP growth, then it is imperative to address its energy needs. Pakistan is currently short of energy between 5,000 to 8,000 MW, therefore like many developed countries Pakistan should establish energy suppliers owned by the public on local, regional and cooperative basis.

Mr. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI said that if the energy democracy idea is implemented, the companies which are not wholly driven by profit will abstain from trickery, attract investment, infuse confidence, offer fair and simple energy tariffs and would further help those who are least able to pay bills and reinvest major portion of profits back into the local communities.
