Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President warns of fertilizer shortage as two urea plants remain shut down –

Lahore, March 15, 2023 (PPI-OT): The President of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, Khalid Mahmood Khokhar, held a press conference in Lahore whereby he stated that Pakistani farmers are currently waiting in long queues to receive the urgently required fertilizer for Rabi crops.

While sowing of cotton has already started in Sindh and Punjab, two major fertilizer plants in the Country remain closed since January 1, 2023. He stated that Pakistan’s economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, with $24 billion of the country’s $31 billion in revenue generated from the sector. Unfortunately, no political party or government has taken any significant steps to promote agricultural development across the Country.

Mr Khokhar demanded that the Petroleum Ministry should immediately provide gas to the closed fertilizer plants so that farmers can obtain urea at reasonable prices. He also expressed concern that the country may face a shortage of 700 million tons of urea this year. The total demand for urea is roughly 6.8 million tons, and both plants can provide around 650 million tons of urea from March 15 to December 31.

Mr Khokhar also added that with consistently rising cost of production for farmers, it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to compete with neighbouring countries that subsidize the same costs for agricultural inputs.

He stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, agriculture was the only sector that helped feed the Pakistani people, thanks to the blessings of Allah Almighty. While all other sectors were closed, agriculture played an essential role in providing sustenance to the nation. He highlighted that around 18 million acres of land can be brought under cultivation to ensure food security of the country while this untapped potential can also contribute around USD 34 billion to the National GDP.

President: (President emphasizes on mass awareness about advantages of breastfeeding)

ISLAMABAD:President Dr Arif Alvi has emphasized on mass awareness about advantages of breastfeeding for better health of mother and child.

Addressing a seminar on Promotion of Breastfeeding here on Monday, he said media, Ulema and Lady Health workers have important role to play in this regard.

The President said breastfeeding proves an effective prevention against several diseases for mother and child, and it is the best nutrition for a new born baby. He said we need to follow the Quranic teachings about breastfeeding, which have also been endorsed by modern science.

President: (President approves Anti-Rape Ordinance 2020)

ISLAMABAD:President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday approved Anti-Rape Ordinance 2020.

 

Under the Ordinance, special courts will be set up across the country to expedite trial of rape cases on priority basis.

 

The special courts will dispose of the rape cases within four months.

 

The Ordinance also suggests setting up of Anti-rape Crisis Cells by the Prime Minister, which will be authorized to conduct medico-legal examination within six hours of the incident.

 

A record will be prepared at national level with help of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to register the perpetrators of sexual abuse. The Ordinance prohibits revealing of identity of rape victims.

President: (Charitable hospitals providing excellent eye treatment, surgery facilities: President)

ISLAMABAD:President Dr Arif Alvi inaugurated eye hospital Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust at Anjuman Islamia Welfare Complex Chiniot on Tuesday.

 

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, the President said that the network of charitable hospitals being run by the LRBT in the country has been rendering national level quality services.

 

He said these charitable hospitals are providing excellent eye treatment and surgery facilities free of cost for the economically deprived segments all over Pakistan.

 

He lauded the organization for providing modern health facilities, ensuring cleanliness and having state of the art equipment and machinery at the hospital for eye treatment and operation.

 

He urged the people to play their part for some welfare work in the country. He said that the concept of welfare state like “Rayast-e-Madina” can’t be achieved without the contribution of everyone in Welfare related projects and activities.

 

Talking about COVID-19, he stressed to follow strictly Anti Corona SOP’s especially at work places and gatherings. He said second wave of coronavirus is more severe so it is the responsibility of general public to adopt protective and precautionary measures.

 

He said international community is admiring the steps taken by the Pakistani Government during first wave of Covid-19.

President: (President stresses to create market driven job opportunities for youth)

ISLAMABAD:President Dr Arif Alvi has said there is a need to create opportunities for students and young people according to demand of market.

 

He was addressing convocation of Pakistan Institute of Fashion Designs in Lahore on Tuesday. He said we have to focus on value addition for economic development in country.

 

Dr Arif Alvi said Pakistan Institution of Fashion Designs is an important department which is playing vital role in boosting economy of country. The President said fashion has communication power and art advertising getting new trends and technology have boosted them.

President: (Pakistan heading in right direction: President)

ISLAMABAD:President Dr Arif Alvi has said Pakistan is heading in the right direction, showing positive indicators in various sectors, including economy, law and order and social development.

 

He said this while addressing the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants (ICMA) Pakistan Convocation here on Wednesday.

 

He said current account deficit has been successfully tackled and exports of the country are on the rise despite Covid-19. The President said Pakistan has overcome the challenge of terrorism while extremism and polarization are rising in India.
