WAPDA crowned 10th National Archery Champion 2023; Win trophy with 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze medals

Lahore, March 20, 2023 (PPI-OT):WAPDA reigned supreme in archery too, as it crowned National Archery Champion 2023. WAPDA won 10th DHA National Archery Championship with three gold, two bronze and one silver medals, while Pakistan Army finished as the runners-up with two gold, three silver and one bronze medals in the event.

According to the details, WAPDA women’s team comprising Kiran Muhammad, Nighet Naheed and Sadia Mai won gold medal in Women’s team event, while WAPDA’s archer Mubashar Nazar grabbed gold medal in Men’s and WAPDA’s archer Sadia Mai in Women’s event.

The Championship was held at Lahore under the aegis of Pakistan Archery Federation. Besides WAPDA and Pakistan Army, the teams hailing from DHA Lahore, HEC, Police, Railways, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Gilgit Baltistan participated in the Championship.

Financing for WAPDA Projects discussed with ADB

Lahore, February 27, 2023 (PPI-OT):A 5-member delegation of Asian Development Bank (ADB) called on Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) today. The delegation was comprised of Executive Director for Pakistan Noor Ahmed, Executive Director for Japan Takahiro Yasui, Executive Director for People’s Republic of China Veihua Liu, Executive Director for Korea Sangmin Ryu and Director’s Advisor Ronald Ray San Juan.

The matters relating to development priorities, roadmap and financing of WAPDA projects were discussed during the meeting. Member Finance WAPDA Naveed Asghar Chaudhry and Member Power WAPDA Engineer Jamil Akhtar were also present on the occasion.

The delegation was briefed about the low-cost, clean and green energy generation plan, WAPDA is implementing on priority to minimize dependence on costly thermal electricity being generated on imported fuel and counter its adverse impact on the environment. The delegation was also apprised of WAPDA’s asset base, financial streams and innovative strategy to arrange funds for construction of its projects.

Besides discussing under-construction WAPDA projects, Diamer Basha Dam and Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project in particular, portfolio of the projects, which are ready for initiating construction work namely Thakot and Pattan, was also presented to the delegation for Projects Readiness Financing by the ADB. The delegation was also briefed about the excellent financing opportunities in WAPDA projects.

WAPDA win Women’s Title in National Netball Championship 

Lahore, February 14, 2023 (PPI-OT):The winning spree of WAPDA in sports continues, as it retained Women’s title in 22nd National Netball Championship. Defending champion WAPDA beat Sindh by 16-7 score in the final, played today at Pakistan Sports Board Complex, Islamabad.

The 4-day Championship was organized by Pakistan Netball Federation. Some 11 teams including WAPDA, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Pakistan Army, HEC and PNE Elite, contested for the Women’s title.

Meanwhile, WAPDA remained runners-up for the Men’s title, as it lost to Pakistan Army by 27-30 score in a sensational final of the Championship. The score in four quarters regulation time was 24-24. Score of the two teams by end of the first extra-time quarter was again levelled. However, in the last quarter of extra time, Pakistan Army won the match by 30-27 score.

As many as 13 teams played for Men’s title, which include Pakistan Army, WAPDA, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, HEC, Police, Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Navy. Chairman Pakistan Netball Federation Zafar Awan, chief guest of the concluding ceremony, gave away trophies, medals and prizes to the winning teams, players and officials.

Federal Interior Minister visits Diamer Basha Dam; Reviews security arrangements at site 

Lahore, February 13, 2023 (PPI-OT):Federal Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah Khan visited Diamer Basha Dam Project, being constructed on River Indus, 40-Kilometre downstream of Chilas town. He was accompanied by Federal Secretary Interior Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) and National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) Muhammad Tahir Rai. The visit was aimed at assessing the overall security scenario on the mega multi-purpose project, which is of vital significance for the national development in the years ahead.

During the briefing, the Federal Minister was apprised, in detail, about the security arrangements, which are in place to facilitate smooth construction work on different sites in the project area. Addressing the meeting, the Federal Minister said that the scheduled completion of Diamer Basha Dam Project is directly linked with the safe and congenial environment at the project sites, and that can only be made possible by enforcing well-thought out and coherent security plans in the project area. Earlier, the Federal Minister for Interior reviewed construction activities and security arrangements at worksite.

Scheduled for completion in 2029, Diamer Basha Dam will have a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 MAF to irrigate 1.23 million acres of additional land. It will have installed power generation capacity of 4,500 MW, and provide 18 billion units of green and clean hydel electricity to the National Grid per annum. A sum of Rs.78.5 billion is being spent on resettlement of affectees and CBMs in health, education and infrastructure development. Thor Hydel Power Station, Thak Hydel Power Station and Cadet College Chilas are amongst these CBMs. In addition, the locals are being accorded priority in employment opportunities on Diamer Basha Dam Project.

WAPDA yet again crowned Women National Volleyball Champion 

Lahore, February 10, 2023 (PPI-OT):Defending champion WAPDA, yet again, won Women National Volleyball Championship, as it defeated Pakistan Army in the final in a nail-biting thriller by 3 to 1 set with 24-26, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-21 points.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs, Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja was the Chief Guest at the concluding ceremony of the championship. She gave away trophies to the winner and runners-up. In addition, she also distributed medals among the players and officials of the teams securing first, second and third position in the event.

The 5-day Women National Volleyball Championship was held under the aegis of Pakistan Volleyball Federation at Liaqat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad. Besides the finalists, eight other teams participated in the championship including Higher Education Commission (HEC), Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK and Islamabad.

Mohmand Dam Project: Construction in progress on all 11 sites; Project likely to be completed in 2026 

Lahore, January 25, 2023 (PPI-OT):Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) was briefed during his visit to under-construction Mohmand Dam Project that the diversion system is scheduled for completion in November this year, while the project is likely to be completed in 2026.

Member (Finance) WAPDA Naveed Asghar Chaudhry and Member (Power) WAPDA Engineer Jamil Akhtar were also present during the Chairman’s visit to Mohmand Dam Project. WAPDA is constructing Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project on River Swat, upstream of Munda Head works in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

During his visit to the project today, the Chairman reviewed construction work on different sites, which included re-regulation pond, main dam, spillway, diversion tunnels, access tunnel, power intake, power house, switch yard and irrigation system etc. He urged upon the project management to strictly adhere to the specifications laid down for construction of the project. Reviewing the pre and post-flood situations, the Chairman was of the view that concerted efforts are needed to complete this mega project in accordance with the timelines. WAPDA’s project management, the Consultants and the Contractor will have to work pro-actively in this regard, he further said.

Later, GM and PD, Mohmand Dam Project, flanked by the Consultants and the Contractor, gave a run-down of progress on the project. It was briefed that most of the damages, caused to the diversion system by the devastating flood last summer, were got repaired till December last. At present, the construction work is progressing ahead on all 11 sites of the project, day and night on the sites where feasible.

Mohmand Dam is a multi- purpose project. On completion, it will store 1.2 MAF of water and help mitigate floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera. Besides supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land, it will also irrigate 18,237 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda. Installed generation capacity of Mohmand Dam is 800 MW. It will contribute 2.86 billion units of low-cost and environment friendly hydel electricity per annum to the National Grid.

The project will also provide 300 million gallons water per day to Peshawar for drinking purpose. Estimated annual benefits of the Project stands at Rs. 51.6 billion. A sum of Rs. 4.5 billion has been earmarked for Confidence Building Measures (CBM) in the project area for socio-economic development of the locals.

Passing out of WAPDA security staff at Tarbela

Lahore, January 20, 2023 (PPI-OT):Passing out ceremony of the first batch, comprising 150 WAPDA security personnel, was held today at the newly-established WAPDA Security Force Training School, Tarbela. Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) was the chief guest. GM (Security) WAPDA also attended the ceremony. The Chairman witnessed the march past and skills’ demonstration by the trained security staff. He also gave away prizes to the personnel, who earned distinction during their training.

Addressing the ceremony, the Chairman said that we have been revamping WAPDA Security Force to make it an independent and fully equipped security apparatus to cater for security needs of WAPDA projects. I am confident that WAPDA Security Training School will go a long way in achieving this fundamental objective, he further said. The Chairman also thanked SSG Headquarters for providing support in imparting training to WAPDA security staff.

It is worth mentioning that WAPDA Security Force Training School has recently been established at Tarbela with a view to forging a comprehensive, robust and pro-active security mechanism to counter varying internal and external threats to WAPDA installations and projects.
