The continuously rising electricity prices in Pakistan are the result of the incompetence of the rulers: PDP

Pasban Democratic Party Chairman Altaf Shakoor said in a statement today that the increasing cost of electricity for the nation, constant electricity shortages, and the growing circular debt crisis are not due to a lack of natural resources but are the result of poor governance and policy failures.

Shakoor pointed out the missed opportunities in Pakistan’s renewable energy sector, noting that with approximately 300 sunny days annually and a wind energy capacity of 50,000 megawatts in the coastal areas of Sindh, Gharo-Jhimpir, the country could have been a leader in affordable energy production. Instead, due to the government’s preference for expensive imported fuels such as oil, coal, and LNG, billions of dollars in foreign exchange are leaving the country every year.

The chairman urged federal and provincial authorities to adopt a robust national renewable energy strategy. He called for the establishment of extensive solar parks and wind farms, the modernization of the national grid, and investment in battery storage solutions. Additionally, Shakoor supported the widespread adoption of rooftop solar installations at both residential and industrial levels.

To achieve self-reliance in renewable energy, Shakoor emphasized the need for transparent, stable, and investor-friendly policies. He also highlighted the importance of developing local manufacturing capabilities for solar panels, inverters, batteries, and wind energy equipment, which can reduce imports and create job opportunities.

Citing examples of countries like Denmark, Spain, and Portugal, Shakoor pointed out that these nations have successfully harnessed renewable energy despite limited resources. He compared this to Pakistan’s situation, where vast potentials remain untapped due to governmental inefficiency.

Concluding, Shakoor said that the country’s solar and wind resources are a collective asset, and failing to utilize them due to flawed policies is an unforgivable national negligence. As the nation struggles with rising debts, expensive electricity rates, and a weakening economy, the need for action becomes even more critical.
