The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice was held on Tuesday at the Parliament Lodges

Islamabad, July 17, 2021 (PPI-OT):The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice was held on Tuesday at the Parliament Lodges

The meeting was chaired by Senator Syed Ali Zafar. Members who attended were Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, Senator Faooq Hamid Naek, Senator Kamran Murtaza, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokar, Senator Walid Iqbal and Senator Musadik Masood Malik.

Issues scheduled for deliberation included consideration of the International Court of Justice (Review and Reconsideration) Bill; the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2021; the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Bill 2021; and the Muslim Family Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

As per decision of the Committee all matters besides the Muslim Family Laws (Amendment) Bills 2021 were deferred due to absence of the Minister for law and Justice. An in-House deliberation over the said Bills ensued. Members opined that since sectarian issues could flare up in the country a Bill that displayed sectarian overtones could be misinterpreted. Accommodating provisions of different factions would be a daunting task as well. Moreover, settled issues of Muslim Family laws as well as decisions to legislate for Muslims on the whole and not for sects or sub sects separately, should not be stirred under the current circumstances.
