A highlevel United Nations delegation led by UN Resident Coordinator and UNHCR Representative Muhammad Yahya visited Khairpur on Tuesday to assess postflood rehabilitation efforts and development initiatives in the district.
The delegation, comprising representatives from UNICEF, the United Nations Information Centre, and the Food and Agriculture Organization, was received by Deputy Commissioner Khairpur Fayaz Hussain Rahoojo, Assistant Commissioner Kot Diji Darya Khan Chandio, and other district officials.
During the visit, the delegation toured a prefabricated school building constructed with UNICEF’s support following the 2022 floods. The school currently enrolls 75 girls and is staffed by three female teachers. A special session on social and behavioral change was organized during the visit to promote education and positive community engagement among students and teachers.
The delegation also met families benefiting from the Benazir Nashonuma Program to discuss access to nutritional support, health services, and other essential facilities in the area.
Later, the district administration hosted a traditional Sindhi lunch in honor of the guests, presenting them with cultural gifts including Ajrak, Sindhi caps, and handicrafts.
In meetings held during the visit, Deputy Commissioner Rahoojo and UN officials reviewed the damage caused by the 2022 floods, emergency aid provided by international organizations including UNICEF, the World Food Programme, UNIC, ChildFund, and FAO, and the ongoing rehabilitation activities in the district. District authorities also shared updates on current recovery projects and discussed future collaboration for continued support.
