Urgent Overhaul at Fish Harbor Mandated Ahead of Crucial EU Audit

Provincial authorities have issued strict directives for an immediate and comprehensive overhaul of the Karachi Fish Harbor, warning of punitive action against any department failing to meet tight deadlines set ahead of a critical visit by a European Union audit delegation.

According to official information today, the Sindh Government has initiated a detailed plan to align the port”s facilities with European Union requirements. In a high-level meeting chaired by Provincial Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Muhammad Ali Malkani, officials discussed the developmental and technical matters essential for the harbor”s modernization. The session included the Secretary of Livestock, the DG of Marine Fisheries, and representatives from various government departments.

Minister Malkani ordered the priority resolution of technical issues concerning the harbor”s pontoons and jetties to prevent any disruption to operations. Taking serious notice of malfunctioning street lighting, he also directed that the installation and repair of all lights be completed within a two-month timeframe.

Concerns were raised over the facility”s poor sanitation, encroachments within the designated red zone, and the presence of derelict boats. The minister mandated daily cleaning schedules, the removal of all unauthorized structures, and the immediate eviction of unfit and nonfunctional vessels from the harbor.

The meeting also highlighted the necessity for upgrading the boat registration and licensing standards, alongside modernizing the wireless communication systems to improve maritime coordination and safety.

Muhammad Ali Malkani emphasized that the harbor”s upgrade is vital not only for the fisheries sector but also for Karachi”s overall economic vitality. He stated that securing clearance from the European Union is expected to significantly increase fish exports to Europe and other nations, thereby boosting foreign exchange earnings for the country.
