Winning Candidate in Chiniot-II Rejected by Majority of Voters in 2024 Polls

The newly elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-94 Chiniot-II secured the seat in the 2024 General Elections despite a significant majority-66 percent of voters who cast ballots-choosing other contenders. The winner garnered support from only 18 percent of the constituency”s total registered electorate.

According to a report, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49), the victor received 79,623 votes, representing just 31 percent of the 256,483 ballots cast on February 8, 2024. A substantial 169,055 individuals who participated in the polling process opted for alternative candidates, indicating they did not want the winner to represent them.

The constituency recorded a voter turnout of 57 percent from a total of 447,538 registered voters. The race was closely contested among the top contenders, with the runner-up securing 28 percent of the ballots cast and the third-placed candidate receiving 27 percent. The remaining candidates collectively obtained 11 percent of the vote.

An analysis of the results also showed that 7,805 ballots, or three percent of the total votes cast, were declared invalid and therefore did not contribute to any candidate”s tally.

This case is part of a constituency-wise analysis by the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) examining the unrepresentativeness of Pakistan’s electoral outcomes. The report highlights how the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system can distort representation, particularly in multi-candidate electoral contests common in Pakistan.

FAFEN’s analysis suggests that in such races, where three or more contenders are typical, a majority of the electorate may feel unrepresented. This situation can lead to questions about the legitimacy of the outcome and potentially contribute to political instability.
