President Asif Ali Zardari has applauded the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, characterising it as a crucial move towards diminishing tensions and re-establishing calm in the area, yet he immediately cautioned that the broader regional de-escalation remains precarious following an Israeli violation.
According to an information by PPP today, the President noted that a two-week cessation of hostilities between the United States and Iran had underpinned an understanding for restraint, which was subsequently breached in Lebanon by Israel.
The President underscored Pakistan’s deep commitment to regional stability, asserting that enduring peace can only be realised through constructive dialogue, mutual respect for national sovereignty, and unwavering adherence to international legal principles. He stated that the current truce offers a valuable opportunity to progress towards lasting tranquillity.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent backing for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, President Zardari highlighted the nation”s active engagement with both regional and international stakeholders. This engagement aims to alleviate friction between the United States and Iran, recognising that a comprehensive and lasting peace in West Asia necessitates addressing the underlying causes of conflict. Pakistan, he added, will continue to champion all genuine initiatives that promote de-escalation and foster a just, enduring, and inclusive peace across the entire region.
President Zardari reiterated his warning regarding the fragility of the current momentum towards de-escalation, observing that any departure from the spirit of the initial understanding risks exacerbating tensions. He strongly stressed the imperative of restraint and responsible conduct by all involved parties at this critical juncture.
