Zimbabwe’s national women’s cricket team has announced a significantly reshaped 15-player squad for their forthcoming white-ball series against Pakistan, signalling the commencement of a long-term rebuilding phase aimed at nurturing future international talent. This strategic shift follows the retirement of long-serving skipper Mary-Anne Musonda and sees only five players retained from the previous tour to New Zealand in March.
Nomvelo Sibanda will lead the squad as interim captain, stepping into the role after Musonda concluded her international career. She will be supported by the experienced all-rounder Precious Marange, whose presence is expected to provide essential guidance to the relatively young and inexperienced group, according to a statement today.
The 15-member contingent features a blend of youth and limited experience. Among the promising talents included are all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu, who makes her return following recovery from a concussion sustained during the recent New Zealand tour. She is joined by fellow emerging prospects Beloved Biza and Adel Zimunu.
However, the squad will be without several prominent figures. Josephine Nkomo and Nyasha Gwanzura are unavailable due to injuries, while Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano misses out because of personal commitments. Furthermore, a number of players from the New Zealand series, including Modester Mupachikwa, Chiedza Dhururu, Loreen Tshuma, Loryn Phiri, and Tendai Makusha, have not been re-selected.
The tour itself marks a historic occasion, representing the Zimbabwe Women’s team’s inaugural visit to Pakistan. The itinerary includes a three-match One Day International (ODI) series, scheduled for 3, 6, and 9 May, which will contribute to the ICC Women”s Championship 2025-2029 cycle. This will be followed by a three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series on 12, 14, and 15 May. All six fixtures are set to take place at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi.
