Raja Maqpoon takes oath as 6th GB governor

GILGIT:Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon was sworn as the sixth governor of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) on Sunday.

Chief Judge supreme Appellate court of Gilgit-Baltistan Justice Javed Iqbal administered the oath at the Governor House Gilgit.

The ceremony was attended by the GB Chief Hafiz Hafeezur Rahman, cabinet ministers, elites, and senior civil and military authorities and other notables.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had nominated Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon as the next GB governor after Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan stepped down from the post on September 15, following PTI’s victory in general elections.

PTI formally announced the chairman’s approval of Maqpoon’s nomination as governor on September 25.

In a statement Maqpoon had thanked PM Imran for entrusting him with the responsibility and said he aspired to play the role of a bridge between the federal and GB government for the betterment of the people of the region.

Maqpoon had further said that he wanted to take all political parties along and promised that he would take special funds from the federal government for the development and progress of Gilgit.

Maqpoon is the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for the region. He was defeated by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Akbar Khan Taban in the GB Assembly election from Skardu constituency in 2015.
