SHC notices on plea against Auqaf dept

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued notices to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh and Auqaf Department, government of Sindh for 8 May on a petition seeking security of tombs and not using donations collected at tombs and mosques properly on them.

The court was hearing the petition filed by Global Foundation, an NGO, and it issued notices to IGP and Auqaf department.

The petition said that 28 tombs and 23 mosques are in control of Auqaf department and this department takes all donations offered by the visitors of these shrines and mosques.

Despite collection of millions rupees of donations and contributions, and also government’s budget, the condition of these old mosques and tombs is not satisfactory’’ the petition said.

It said there are Rs4 Crore areas of electricity and now power connections of some tombs and mosques are being disconnected due to bill default.

The petition said that the Auqaf department has done nothing for the reconstructions and renovation of these tombs and mosques.

There are 1200 shops in the premises of these tombs and mosques which are owned by Auqaf department,’’ the petition said. It said tombs and mosques also face security threats due to the lack of protection.

The court, later, adjourned the hearing till the 8th May.
