United Hawks cruises into cricket tourney semifinals

KARACHI:United Hawks overpowered Rex XI by eight wickets and confirmed its place in the second edition of Corporate T-20 League Cricket Tournament.

 

Rex XI batted first in the match and put on board 113 runs before losing all of its wickets in 19 overs. Hyder Ali top scored for the side with 26 runs. Hawks United’s Haider picked four wickets cheaply for 13 runs while Muhammad Talha took three for 15.

 

In response, United Hawks easily achieved the target in 14.3 overs with eight wickets in hand. Arman batted well for the side and scored unbeaten 39 runs.

 

Meanwhile, other teams who made it to semifinals are Karachi Strikers, C-Square Pythons and Rangoonwala Cricket Club.

 

In another match, Rangoonwala defeated C-Square Pythons by nine wickets. Ejaz Ahmed and Rizwan Jadoon bowled well for the winners in the match picking four wickets each.

KU extends deadline of exam form

Karachi:The Controller of Examinations University of Karachi Dr Syed Zafar Hussain on Tuesday announced that external students of MA/ double MA/ improvement of division could submit their examination forms for annual examinations 2019 till November 27, 2020.

 

The candidates of MA Previous and Final could submit examination forms along with the relevant documents and paid fee voucher of Rs4650/- at the counter number 1 External Unit Silver Jubilee Gate from 9am till 1pm.

 

The KU controller of examination Dr Syed Zafar said that those candidates, who were registered in 2013 or earlier and want to appear in the annual exams, could appear by paying Rs5000/- extra charges in addition to their examination fee.

KU, Swedish University inks MoU to conduct joint study on air pollution

Karachi:The University of Karachi and Lund University of Sweden signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a joint study on air pollution. The KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and the research group leader Environment, Society and Health, LU, Dr Ebba Malmqvist inked the MoU documents. The virtual signing ceremony was held at the VC Secretariat.

 

According to the MoU, KU and Occupational and Environmental Medicine of LU have aimed to be a part of a sustainable society by providing science-based risk assessments to environmental health problems. Researchers of both universities would work on the challenges in a society where air pollution, directly and indirectly, affects health.

 

As per the MoU, both parties have agreed to collaborate on the issue of air pollution and health effects in the various fields of human diseases like occupational musculoskeletal disease, environmentally-induced cancer, and reproductive disturbances, metals, and health, behavioral medicine (stress/psychosocial environment and work organization, aerosol science, and technology airborne particles).

 

Dr Ebba Malmqvist informed the participants that both universities have planned to explore baseline air pollution study to be conducted in various sites. Meanwhile, the KU VC Khalid Iraqi shared that the University has nine faculties with 56 teaching departments and 26 research institutions and centers with more than 1300 qualified faculty members.

 

He mentioned that during the last five years, the KU has awarded more than 1100 M Phil/PhD degrees in various disciplines and faculty members are pursuing research in various disciples and publishing extensively in journals of international repute. The KU also provides excellent opportunities to its postgraduate students and faculty members for scholarships and split programs as well.

(CITY): NAB seals off 14 properties of ex-WAPDA official

LARKANA:A NAB Karachi team, led by its deputy director Kashif Shaikh, sealed properties owned by former WAPDA Hydro Electric Union leader Qurban Ali Jatoi here on Tuesday.

 

The properties are located on Station Road in the city, which has been sealed off, according to NAB sources. These include more than five shops, one office, a huge hotel and parking place. According to the sources, Jatoi built huge assets beyond his income and a case was lodged against him at NAB Karachi in 2014. To implement the Accountability Court order, NAB team sealed his 14 properties.

Demo held for re-registering QUEST Larkana with PEC

LARKANA:The students of Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), Larkana, held a protest demonstration in front of the campus gate here Tuesday against deregistration with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), unavailability of required facilities at their hostels and for implementation of COVID-19 pandemic SOPs.

 

They were holding placards in their hands and also shouted slogans in favour of their just demands.

 

While talking to newsmen, Muhammad Din Bahlkani, Nisar Ahmed Chachar, Humayoon Bhatti, Murtaza Noonari, Adeel Dahani,, Munsif Jagirani and others said that the institutes registration was with PEC, which now been cancelled two years back due to which future of about 200 students of four vital departments including electrical, civil, mechanical and electronics was hanging in the balance and students of Batches 16 and 17 were extremely worried along with their parents who spent their life earning on them.

 

They said: “Hostels are without required basic facilities of electricity, water and washrooms are extremely unhygienic.”

 

They said due to coronavirus, supplementary exams are also being held before schedule which had complicated the situation. They said that implementation of COVID-19 SOPs of social distancing and hands’ sanitizing was not carried out like other universities of the country which was unjust.

 

They demanded strict observance of coronavirus SOPs, restoration of PEC registration and proper facilities at hostels or else, they warned, they will be forced to come out on roads for acceptance of their demands.

PRCS organize awareness session on COVID-19 for journalists

KARACHI:Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC) Sindh branch organized an awareness session on COVID-19 prevention and emergency first aid, exclusively for journalists at Training Institute, Hilal-e-Ahmer House, Karachi on Tuesday.

 

The training was attended by more than 25 journalists, including cameramen, health and crime reporters, where they were communicated how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and save lives in emergencies.

 

Addressing the closing ceremony of the awareness session, Chairman PRCS-Sindh Shahnaz S. Hamid said that PRCS is highly committed in providing basic health and First Aid facilities to maximum people of the country to deal with emergencies, hence for, a series of training/workshops are being organized at national and regional levels.

 

She emphasized that first aid training is very important for media practitioners whether they are in field or at home. She highlighted the importance of the subject and said that not only accidents, bomb blasts and other emergencies are frequent, but nowadays the spread of COVID-19 is also a cause for concern, and generally journalists are the first to arrive at the scene after any accident.

 

Journalists usually cover accidents or crowded events where any untoward incident can be expected at any time, and now they will face another difficulty as they are likely to be affected by COVID-19. These awareness sessions contribute imperatively in educating journalists about the basic techniques of first aid, and the prevention of COVID-19, as a result of which they can save many lives while protecting their own lives, she added.

 

Chairman also urged the journalists to join hands with the Pakistan Red Crescent and voluntarily serve to alleviate the sufferings of the weaker segment of the society. Provincial Secretary PRCS Sindh Kanwar Waseem appreciated all the journalists for taking time to attend this important session. He further said that the PRC teams have been working tirelessly to play a significant role in the ongoing national efforts to overcome the spread of the COVID-19 in the country through a robust synergized response.

 

He uttered that when the coronavirus epidemic was on the rise in Sindh, the Pakistan Red Crescent had fulfilled its promise to provide a free COVID-19 testing facility in Karachi, especially for those who could not afford the cost of the Covid-19 test. “PRCS also arranged free COVID-19 test facility in various educational institutes in Karachi, provided PPE kits to many government hospitals across the country, distributed ration and cash grants to those who were directly or indirectly affected by COVID-19 and lockdown”, said by Kanwar Waseem.

 

Muhammad Aftab Madani, Media and Communication Officer, PRCS Sindh, informed the participants that a similar session has been organized for more journalists on November 12, 2020. He requested journalists to spare some time to attend the lucrative session on prevention of COVID-19? And also learn basics of Emergency First Aid. The closing ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participants.

 

Seminar on road safety awareness held

Karachi:A seminar on ‘Road Safety Awareness’ was organized by the Works and Services Department of Sindh under the Sindh Provisional Road Improvement Project (SPRIP) at a local hotel.

 

The seminar is part of a series of training sessions to enhance the skills of the department’s technical staff and road sector engineers. Similar seminars and workshops are scheduled in Hyderabad and Sukkur to provide information and training on modern technology in the technical field to the officers and staff of the department in accordance with international standards.

 

The experts highlighted various aspects and discussed various issues related to planning, inspection, ensuring world standards and solving the problems of roads in Sindh with the help of modern technology as per the current situation. In his message at the seminar, Secretary Works and Services Imran Atta Soomro stressed on the need for the engineers of the department to take full part in the training workshops to enhance their expertise . Project Director (SPRIP) Mushtaq Ahmed Memon and others also addressed the seminar.
