Workers remittances exceeded $2.0 billion: SBP

KARACHI:State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said in a statement on Monday that workers remittances exceeded $ 2.0 billion for the eighth consecutive month and amounted to $2.3 billion in January 2021, up by 19 percent over January 2020. However, remittances remained slightly lower from December 2020 level of $2.4 billion.

According to the bank statement, on cumulative basis, workers’ remittances reached $16.5 billion during Jul-Jan FY21, registering 24 percent increase over same period last year.

A large part of workers’ remittances during Jul-Jan FY21 was sourced from Saudi Arabia ($4.5 billion), United Arab Emirates ($3.4 billion), United Kingdom ($2.2 billion) and United States ($1.4 billion).

This sustained increase in workers’ remittances largely reflects growing use of banking channel that is attributed to continuous efforts by Government and SBP to attract inflows through official channel, limited cross border travel amid second wave of COVID-19 and flexible exchange rate regime.

CM aide inaugurates Urban Forest Project on Clifton shore

KARACHI:Spokesperson of Sindh Government and Adviser for Law, Environment and Coastal Development Barrister Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated the Urban Forest Project on the shores of Clifton.

Talking to media after attending the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest, Wahab said that Ali Zaidi was not the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, but Federal Affairs for Twitter. He said that in the past no special attention was paid to the coastal strip of Karachi on which the Sindh government thought that revolutionary measures should be taken with regard to climate change. That is why we have started an urban forestry project on the coast.

He said that the plants to be planted in this project are plants of our province and city and also some Japanese plants. In the project, 20 acres of land has been allotted for tree planting is the place where there was garbage before and today it is a pleasant atmosphere here. The Spokesperson of Sindh Government said that in this positive work we came out in good faith.

“We started the work first and then the media was invited.” “I am sorry that some people do not work themselves and do not keep their promises. If someone does something then they try to make it controversial,” he told reporters.

Did this land belong to Karachi Port Trust when garbage was dumped and huts were built here? It did not occur to me that this land belongs to Karachi Port Trust but now the Sindh government is taking practical steps against environmental pollution. Putting it into practice, they are making vicious attempts to make it controversial with their statements.

He said that Ali Zaidi was not the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs but the Federal Affairs for Twitter had tried to spoil the work but all this land was not owned by Karachi Port Trust but by the Sindh government. “These people are occupying Sindh government lands and are blaming us,” he said.

He said that 769 acres of land of Karachi Port Trust is on Sindh government lands and these people are occupying it. He said that all the documents for the accuracy of the record were available in the Supreme Court and if any attempt was made to make the land of Sindh government disputed then legal action would be taken.

“I am,” he said. I will also highlight this issue in the Sindh cabinet. These people are illegally occupying the land of Sindh and these people are stealing and forcing it. He said that those who claimed to have voted from Karachi but did nothing in practice. “The plants we planted in 2019 have become tenacious trees today,” he said. Criticizing the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, he said that he believed in China cutting and now these people were committing theft and extortion.

The people who voted and claimed from Karachi but did nothing but the plants we planted on My Kalachi Road in 2019 have now become tenacious trees. He said that the elected officials are using their ATMs to save their power and these people are being brought to the Senate to save them. The target of these incompetents is not the welfare of the people and they have no political thinking. These people are leading the country to disaster. Petrol prices have been increased six times.

He said that earlier these people used to say in the House that we will come to the government and reduce the prices but now where have their promises and claims gone. He said that all these things show that this is not a people’s government. From today onwards, I will name his party “Pakistan Tehreek-e-Istishal.”

He further said that Murad Ali Shah had only mentioned Surrey and he would get a surprise on the 3rd but this government does not want an eco-friendly environment. He said that the judiciary has ruled that land ownership is a provincial matter and constitutionally land ownership is a provincial subject.

PM: (PM inaugurates Miyawaki urban forest at Jilani Park)

Prime Minister Imran Khan has inaugurated the Miyawaki Urban Forest at Jilani Park, Lahore on Friday.

Addressing the participants, Imran said: “You have chosen 50 sites to implement the Miyawaki concept whereby a jungle that grew in 50 years previously will now grow in 10 or 20 years. So this is an excellent first step.”

He added that these 50 sites and what is planned for them must be shared with the people because they have a great interest in seeing the declining green cover restored. He maintained barren areas have been transformed into lush, green areas in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa where the government undertook the Billion Tree Tsunami initiative.

The prime minister said that in the last 12 to13 years the city has lost 70 percent of its tree cover.

Counting the lingering effects of smog due to the lost green cover, the premier said that six to 11 years of a person’s lifespan are reduced. He said the adverse affects are so many they “cannot be quantified”.

Pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, it is a unique technique that helps build native forests 10 times faster and 30 times denser.

Under the approach, dozens of native species are planted in the same area, close to each other, which ensures that the plants receive sunlight only from the top, and grow upwards than sideways.
