Assam govt extends AFSPA for six more months in state

Guwahati, September 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The BJP-led government in Assam has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the state for six more months beyond August 28, an official statement said. The official in his statement said, “The Government of Assam in exercise of powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 has declared the entire state of Assam as ‘Disturbed Area’ up to six months with effect from August 28, 2021 unless withdrawn earlier.”

According to an official in the state Home Department, the Act, which gives special powers to the Army and the paramilitary forces, was imposed in Assam in November 1990 and has been extended every six months since then after a review by the state’s law-enforcing agencies.

The AFSPA, which allows the Army and other paramilitary forces to conduct raids, and arrest anyone anywhere without prior notice or arrest warrant, has also been in force in entire Nagaland, certain districts of Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Manipur barring the Imphal municipal areas. Terming the AFSPA as a draconian law, human rights activist, Irom Chanu Sharmila of Manipur had fought for 16 long years till mid-2016, demanding its repeal.

Owaisi booked in UP for ‘vitiating’ communal harmony

Barabanki (India), September 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Uttar Pradesh Police have booked All India Majlis-e-Itthehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi for allegedly vitiating communal harmony, violating Covid norms and making “indecent” remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, police said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the FIR against the AIMIM chief was registered Thursday night at Barabanki city police station after his party’s rally. Superintendent of Police of Barabanki, Yamuna Prasad said, the Hyderabad MP violated Covid guidelines – on mask and social distancing – by arranging huge crowds at the party rally at Katra Chandana Thursday.

“In his speech, the AIMIM chief made statements for vitiating communal harmony and said the 100-year-old Ram Sanehi Ghat mosque was razed by the administration and its debris was also removed. This is contrary to the fact,” the SP said.

“By this statement, Owaisi tried to vitiate communal harmony and incite feelings of a particular community. He also made indecent and baseless remarks against the PM and the Uttar Pradesh chief minister,” he said.

Owaisi was on a three-day trip to Uttar Pradesh, where his party plans to contest 100 seats in the upcoming assembly polls. Owaisi had Thursday alleged there have been efforts to turn the country into a “Hindu Rashtra” since Narendra Modi came to power seven years back.

News portals call raids attempt to stifle independent journalism

New Delhi, September 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):Online news portals, Newslaundry and Newsclick, have said they did their business with honesty and termed Income Tax (IT) surveys on their offices as an attempt to stifle independent journalism.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the IT Department surveyed the offices of the news portals in south Delhi. “They took email dumps and various administrative and financial accounts related to Newsclick,” a statement from Newsclick said, adding, “These investigations are an attempt to stifle independent journalism.”

The Editors Guild said that the IT survey on the offices of online news portals was a dangerous trend of government agencies. It said the harassment and intimidation of independent media must stop. “The Guild is deeply concerned that such indiscriminate seizure of journalists’ data, which could include sensitive information such as details of sources, stories under works and other journalistic data, is in violation of free speech and freedom of press,” a statement said.

Muslim lawmaker speaks of Islamophobia, abuse in UK

London, September 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):A Muslim lawmaker burst into tears during a speech she made and spoke of the abuse she has received since she became a politician during a parliamentary debate on the definition of Islamophobia. Zarah Sultana, the Labour Party Member of Parliament for Coventry South, said she received various abusive messages.

Speaking in tears, she said: “One person, for example, wrote to me, and I quote: ‘Sultana, you and your Muslim mob are a real danger to humanity,’ another wrote I am a ‘cancer everywhere I go’ and soon, they said, ‘Europe will vomit you out.’ A third called me a ‘terrorist sympathizer and scum of the earth,’ and that is sanitized of their unparliamentary language.”

“Before being elected, I was nervous about being a Muslim woman in the public eye,” Sultana said in Westminster Hall. “Growing up, I had seen the abuse prominent British Muslims were subjected to. I knew I wouldn’t be in for an easy ride,” she added.

“And when young girls ask me what it’s like, I’d like to say I was wrong to be worried, that they would face the same challenges as their non-Muslim friends and colleagues. But in my short time in Parliament, that’s not my experience.

“I have discovered that to be a Muslim woman, to be outspoken and left-wing, is to be subject this barrage of racism and hate,” she said. “It’s to be treated by some as if I were an enemy of the country I was born in, as if I don’t belong.”

Sultana also said the abuse she received worsened when she criticized former Prime Minister, Tony Blair for launching an illegal war in Afghanistan. She underlined that “this Islamophobia doesn’t come from a vacuum. It’s not natural or ingrained. It’s taught from the top.”

She also said in the emotional speech that “when a far-right online account targeted me with racist abuse, suggesting that Muslims were an invading army, a Conservative MP replied, not calling them [out] for their racism, but by insulting me.”

Sultana said this Saturday marked the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the US and the “horrific act of mass murder cast a long shadow.” She said that when the war on terror was launched by former US President George Bush and Blair, it “set a narrative that too many readily embraced: Muslims, wherever we are, were portrayed as a security threat, in need of discipline and suppression.”

Sultana underlined that “this was the background of disastrous wars in the Middle East, where false links were drawn between Iraq and the 9/11 attacks, providing false legitimacy to a war that had more to do with oil than the safety of British citizens.”

She said she hoped things could get better in the future while she was keeping her head down, but things got worse. Referring to an article penned by Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, Sultana said: “Today, our prime minister mocks Muslims as ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank robbers.’” “Islamophobia is very real in Britain today,” the Muslim MP continued.

“That’s something I know all too well. But it cannot be defeated in isolation.” “The people spreading this hate don’t just target Muslims. They target Black people, they target Jewish people, they target Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, they target migrants and refugees. “There is safety in solidarity, and it is only in uniting our struggles that we will defeat racism,” she added.
