Uttarakhand struggles with rain aftermath: 52 people dead, 5 still missing

New Delhi, October 21, 2021 (PPI-OT):Landslips blocked roads, many villages went without electricity and the toll climbed to 52 as authorities faced the aftermath of the rains that had battered the Indian state of Uttarakhand for over two days. Six more bodies were pulled out from the rubble of the collapsed houses. Five people are missing and 17 injured, according to official data.

The weather cleared on Wednesday morning after the incessant rains since Sunday night triggered floods which washed away bridges and landslips which blocked access to towns like Nainital for hours. Most of the deaths were due to house collapses and an official statement said 46 of them suffered damage. Nainital district alone saw 28 deaths.

The official count of people missing in rain-related incidents does not include a trekking team of 11 people that left Uttarkashi but had not reached its destination Chitkul in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh. In an unrelated incident, three porters accompanying an ITBP patrol near the India-China border were buried in snow and are presumed dead. A furious Gaula river has damaged the tracks at the Kathgodam railway station in Nainital, which experienced a record 445 mm rainfall on Tuesday.

Brutal suppression of Eid Milad processions tells about India under Modi

Islamabad, October 21, 2021 (PPI-OT):In brazen violation of religious freedom, Hindu extremists backed by police attacked Muslims and prevented them from taking out Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) processions across India.

A report released by Kashmir Media Service said that India under Modi is pursuing controversial policies openly ignoring Muslims’ rights including their religious freedom. On Tuesday, when Muslims tried to take out peaceful Milad processions in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and other states of India to mark the birth anniversary of Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), they were brutally suppressed.

Many Muslims were injured in attacks by Hindu extremists and police as shown in the footages that have been making rounds on social media. The police used lathi-charge against the Muslims. The policemen kept pulling the beards of the Muslims and smashed them to the ground.

The KMS report cited the findings of the US Commission on Int’l Religious Freedom and said that religious freedom in India continued its negative trajectory in 2021. Modi govt is promoting Hindu nationalist policies resulting in systematic and egregious violations of religious freedom in India, the US commission maintained.

The report emphasized that Muslims in India have been facing systematic discrimination, prejudice, and violence despite so-called constitutional protections. Anti-Muslim sentiments have heightened under RSS-backed BJP’s Indian government led by Modi, it added.

Persecution of Muslims, Christians and other minorities has increased manifold since BJP came to power in India, the report said and added that those attacking Muslims are enjoying widespread impunity as Modi is on a mission to purge India of minorities.

Kashmiris feeling cheated, Farooq Abdullah smashes Modi regime’s ‘new era’ mantra

Srinagar, October 21, 2021 (PPI-OT):National Conference President Farooq Abdullah while smashing the edifice of Modi regime’s hollow claim about the ‘dawn of a new era’ in Jammu and Kashmir post August 5, 2019 actions has said that Kashmiris, especially youth are feeling cheated.

Addressing a workers convention in Banihal, he said, “Weren’t we told that August 5, 2019 decisions would bring lasting peace? Where is it then? Where is the much touted new dawn to bring job extravaganza for your educated and skilled youth? Where are those jobs? The projected Naya Kashmir by the ruling dispensation in New Delhi has proved to be a doomsday scenario for the people living on either sides of Chenab and Pir Panjal ranges,” he said as per a statement.

Farooq said the claims of Modi government on Jammu and Kashmir are far from reality. “There has been a systematic disempowerment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly its youth. The claims of the BJP government that the abrogation of Articles 370, 35-A paved the way for job creation, decreased violence, nurturing democracy, eradicating corruption have fallen flat.

The ground situation belies these claims. Having nothing to show, projects sanctioned by previous NC led governments are being shown as the outcome of abrogation. The reality on the ground is that the gap between the secretariat and the people is widening with each passing day.

People, especially the youth of Kashmir, Chenab, Pir Panjal are feeling cheated. The alienation among the youth is at an all-time high. The data released by various Indian agencies also attest to the ground realities in JK. Before August 5, 2019 unilateral decisions, J and K was doing better on various HDI indices nationally but post Aug 05 we are going downhill,” he added.

Farooq further stated that consultations are better than coercion. He said that the corrective measures initiated by the PM were a good start but the need of the hour calls for carrying it forward. “Kashmiris, the People of Pir Panjal, Chenab, and Kargil cannot be subdued by strong-armed measures. Such things have proven abortive in the past and in the future also will prove vain.

Democracies don’t work that way. Democracies ought to have institutionalized debate, discussions, and consultation and reach-out mechanisms. A magnanimous reach-out can only chart-out a new chapter of peace, prosperity and development in J and K,” he added.

He said that NC has all along been protecting the sub-regional heterogeneities of Jammu and Kashmir but the incumbent dispensation at New Delhi, with its selective pick and choose policy, is allowing it to become a causality of majoritarian narratives. NC, he maintained, is committed to take care of the sub-regional aspirations of Doda, Kistawar, Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri and Bhadarwah. He said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir cannot be “subdued by the strong-armed measures”, saying it is the only way out to address issues concerning people.

Three arrested for raising ‘pro-Pakistan’ slogans in Noida procession

New Delhi, October 21, 2021 (PPI-OT):Three persons were arrested on for allegedly raising ‘pro-Pakistan’ slogans during a religious procession taken out in Noida city of India’s Uttar Pradesh. Arrests were made after a video of the incident went viral on social media and the Noida police in its investigation found the video as authentic. The procession was taken out in Sector 20 police station area on Tuesday to mark Eid Milad-un-Nabi. The police were also present on the spot.

“We have arrested three people in this case as well as got the video investigated, prima facie it appears that someone spoke Pakistan in the middle of the Hindustan Zindabad slogans, due to which the crowd also spoke Zindabad,” Noida DCP Rajesh S. told media.

Noida Additional DCP Ran Vijay Singh said, “We got the video examined by experts and after investigation it was found that there was no tampering with the video. We have also registered a case against the accused under relevant sections.”

However, analysts believe that such types of actions like pro-Pakistan sloganeering are carried out through the men associated with Hindu extremist organizations including the ruling BJP in the Muslim gatherings to malign Muslims and justify their suppression.
