Priyantha’s body flown to Sri Lanka as 26 main culprits arrested

LAHORE:The body of Priyantha Kumara, who was tortured to death by a mob in Sialkot, was flown to Siri Lanka, his mother land, with the full official protocol from Lahore Airport on Monday.

Special Assistant to PM Maulana Tahir Ashrafi, Honorary Sri Lankan Consul General Yasin Joya, officials of Sri Lankan High Commission and provincial home department were also present. Provincial Minister for Human Rights and Minorities Affairs Ijaz Alam received the body on behalf of Chief Minister Sardar Usman.

In a statement, CM Usman Buzdar repeated that the whole nation shares the grief. He assured the bereaved family that the government was fulfilling its responsibilities. More than 131 accused had yet been arrested along with 26 main culprits, he continued. The case would be run in anti-terrorism court and all the requirements of justice would be fulfilled to ensure exemplary punishment to the culprits. I am personally overseeing the progress on the case, he added.

On the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, the police have arrested seven main accused in different raids, who were involved in planning, torturing, instigating and attacking Sri Lankan manager in Sialkot. According to a statement, the CM directed official to expedite the investigation as 131 accused have been apprehended yet.

According to the police spokesperson, the CM Punjab and IG are continually monitoring the investigations and the secretary prosecution department has been tasked by CM to supervise the case prosecution. The identification of those involved in torture and instigating the attack is in progress as 26 main culprits have been identified in the police investigation, he added.

Every political party has right to criticize govt working: Info Minister

KARACHI:Sindh Information and Labour Minister Saeed Ghani said on Monday that the residents of Karachi would become the ultimate sufferers of the politics of hatred and prejudice being practiced by Muttahida Quami Movement.

In a video message issued today, the Sindh Information Minister said the politics of hatred and prejudice by MQM was generally harmful to people of entire Sindh. He said that every political party had the right to criticize the working of government and agitate in the peaceful manner.

He said the MQM leadership had started issuing statements based on hatred and prejudice in line with its past traditions. Ghani said it seemed to him that MQM was not in its senses and had become upset. He said that MQM leader Waseem Akhtar had delivered inappropriate remarks against Sindh Chief Minister and people of Sindh. The Information Minister said the Urdu speaking community of the province was unduly being frightened so that they were assembled under the political patronage of MQM.

He said the MQM had been attempting to cause hatred and differences among people of different communities in the province so to reignite the situation of the ethnic strife and clash in Karachi. He said that they strongly condemned vicious acts on the part of the MQM for the sake of its own politics. He said the Sindh government had been working to strengthen the municipal agencies of the province in order to further the process of devolution. The Sindh Information Minister said that Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, had given special instructions to the provincial government that such a municipal system should be devised in the province, which should directly benefit its residents.

He said that a committee of the Sindh government had stared its work in this regard some nine months back. He said the suggestions given by Opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamaat-e-Islami, MQM, and other concerned stakeholders had been taken into account while finalizing the process of improving the system of local governance in Sindh.

Four motorcyclists killed in road mishap

SHIKARPUR:Four motorcyclists were killed and one other injured when two bikes collided with each other near Mirza Waah within the jurisdiction of Rustam police station on Monday.

According to police, the horrible road accident occurred between the two speeding motorcycles. The deceased were identified as Karim Bux Chachar, son of Shah Nawaz Chachar, Ali Mor, son of Ali Gohar Chachar, residents of Karampur, and Muhammad Bux, son of Azizullah Channo of village Sardar Khadim Hussain Jatoi. The injured were Sikandar Ali Chachar of Karampur, Ghulam Ali Chano of Ghotki District whose condition was declared as serious.

The bodies and injured were transported to RBUT Civil Hospital Shikarpur for medico-legal formalities and treatment, respectively. Later, the injured were referred to Sukkur hospital after first aid. The bodies were handed over to their heirs after completing necessary medico-legal formalities.

Motorcyclist killed in road mishap

NOSHKI:Unidentified motorcyclist was killed due to collision of motorcycle with a 2D vehicle in Mill Rehmanzai area of Noshki in Balochistan province on Monday.

According to rescue sources, motorcycle collided with a 2D vehicle in Mill Rehmanzai area of Noshki, resultantly, motorcyclist sustained critical injuries. The injured was rushed to Teaching Hospital, Noshki where the doctors pronounced him dead. The body was kept in the morgue of Teaching Hospital, Noshki for identification.

FORCED EVICTION: Sheikh Sadiq Mandokhail, resident of Zhob, has called on authorities to initiate disciplinary proceedings against authorities of police department Zhob who had forcibly evicted people from their ancestral lands at the behest of former provincial Minister. Addressing a press conference at Quetta Press Club here on Monday with others, he said that people were not only evicted from their homes but their homes were also set ablaze.

Demanding disciplinary action against SP, Zhob, Ahad Khosa and other authorities of police department district Zhob, he said that at the behest of one former provincial Minister, police of Zhob led by SP, Zhob Ahad Khosa forcibly evicted people from their ancestral land in district Zhob of Balochistan province. He added that during operation, women were also severely tortured. He called on authorities to initiate disciplinary proceedings against authorities of police department, Zhob who had forcibly evicted people from their ancestral lands at the behest of one former provincial Minister.

Call to stop cancelling vacant posts of forest dept

QUETTA:Fateh Muhammad, one of the candidates who has appeared in the test conducted for appointment in Forest and Wildlife Department, has called on the authorities not to cancel the vacant posts of Forest and Wildlife Department against which candidates had applied and accordingly appeared in physical test so that deficiency of staff in Forest and Wildlife Department could be overcome.

Addressing a press conference at Quetta Press Club here on Monday with others, he said that unemployed candidates submitted their applications for appointment against the posts advertised by Forest and Wildlife Department, Government of Balochistan, adding that after scrutinizing the applications, physical test of eligible candidate was conducted through TTS, but later the department cancelled the mentioned posts.

He said that presently, Forest and Wildlife Department was facing acute dearth of staff as about 1400 posts are lying vacant due to which department faced problems in stopping deforestation.

He called on Prime Minister, Imran Khan and Chief Minister Balochistan, Mir Abdul Quddus Bezinjo not to cancel the vacant posts of Forest and Wildlife Department against which candidates had applied and accordingly appeared in physical test so that deficiency of staff in Forest and Wildlife Department, Balochistan could be overcome.

Sindh govt starts observe Human Rights Week

KARACHI:The Human Rights Department of Government of Sindh is observing a Human Rights week in the province starting from Monday in connection with the International Human Rights Day being observed all over the world on 10th Decembers.

Addressing a joint press conference along with members of human rights and civil society activists at Karachi Press on Monday, Mr Surendar Valasai, and Special Assistant to Sindh Chief Minister spelled out the week-long programmes pertaining to the Human Rights Week.

On the 10th of December, the main function would be held in Karachi. This will be a seminar on the topic “Human Rights Reforms in Sindh: Context, Challenges and Way Forward”. Mr Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman Pakistan People’s Party will preside over the seminar, whereas, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh will be the chief guest.

Mr. Valasai said Human Rights experts, lawyers and journalists are invited to address this seminar. The main objective of observing week long activities is to highlight the importance of protection and promotion of human rights and create human rights awareness. Tomorrow (on 7th) the department will organize an awareness walk from the Sindh Assembly building to Karachi Press Club. “We have invited all human rights, women’s rights and labour rights organizations, lawyers’ bodies and civil society organizations to participate in this walk.”

On 8th December, we are going to organize a series of seminars on Human Rights in Hyderabad, Sukkur and other major cities in which speakers from various districts of Sindh would speak and highlight the human rights issues in the province. Valasai said on 9th December, the department will launch the human rights awareness campaign in collaboration with Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) and Sindh Madistraul Islam University. This campaign will continue throughout year and we will try to reach major universities and colleagues in the first phase, he added.

He said human rights is an important subject for any society to progress and in the challenging environment where proactive approach is must. “We all have to work together to root out hatred, extremism and intolerance from the society and build a peaceful society where human rights of all citizens are respected.”

The Special Assistant to Sindh CM said the Human Rights department has already announced an Essay Competition for all students of Sindh to write essays in three languages (English, Urdu and Sindhi) on the topic “Importance of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its relevancy with Human Rights contexts in Pakistan”. We have received very good essays and a jury is reviewing all the submissions and results would be announced soon.

He spelled out the measures of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party for upholding human rights. The PPP’s first government of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto has the credit to get passed a consensus Constitution of Pakistan in 1973 from the Parliament, which has provided almost all the fundamental rights outlined in the UDHR.

Another credit goes to the PPP, as its previous governments played a key role in the passage of the landmark 18th Amendment in the Constitution that paved the way to provincial autonomy and implementation of human rights related provisions at the province. Majority of International Human Rights Conventions were ratified during the various PPP governments.

He said his department has recently established Human Rights Management System with the support of UNDP, which would further help in data collection and reporting on human rights issues. “We are well aware of the challenges being faced by people in Sindh and our government is making. The press conference was also attended by the Secretary of the department Jawed Sibghatullah Mahar, noted artist Ayoub Khoso, human rights activists Mahnaz Rahman and Naghma Shaikh.

PPP will win upcoming general elections: Marri

This she has expressed in a statement issued here on today. Marri said that Pakistan Muslim League’s (N) blame of PPP buying votes is a futile attempt to dispel their embarrassment. She added that Pakistan People’s Party would win the upcoming general elections in the guidance of former president Asif Ali Zardari and under the leadership of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and that will be reckoned as the victory of the peoples.

She further said that PPP had gained the political and moral lead in the recent by-polls of NA-133 while ruling political party of PTI fled from the contest of by-elections due to the fear of defeat and PTI will receive curses only despite votes from the people in the next general elections. Marri uttered that PPP leadership had faced difficult situations and did not leave country despite hardship.
