Curbing flour smuggling Centre’s job not province’s: KP minister

PESHAWAR:While reacting to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government should stop the wheat and flour smuggling to Afghanistan, KP Food Minister Atif Khan has reminded the federal government that it is Centre’s responsibility to end smuggling of the commodity, not of the province.

In a message on Sunday, KP Food Minister Atif Khan said first of all, flour was not being smuggled to Afghanistan. And if at all the commodity is being smuggled out, then it’s federal government’s responsibility to curb it, he said adding that the premier should hold federal departments accountable for that.

Atif Khan reminded the premier that the authorities which controlled the border movement, they came under the federal government’s control. He said earlier (in PTI stint) there was not any smuggling of the commodity. “But if the wheat and flour are being smuggled out, the federal government should act to stop it,” he added.

He further demanded of Prime Minister Shehbaz to ensure the wheat transportation from Punjab after lifting an embargo on the provincial flour transportation. The provincial food minister said there was no dearth of flour and the province had enough stock of it. He denied any hike in the Atta price.

MQM-P’s Nasreen Jalil to be new Sindh Governor

KARACHI:Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) senior leader Nasreen Jalil will be the new governor of Sindh province.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday approved the name of Nasreen Jalil nominated by the MQM-P. He also forwarded a summary to President Arif Alvi for appointment of the new Sindh governor.

MQM-P reportedly had sent five options to PM Shehbaz Sharif as part of the power-sharing agreement between PML-N and MQM-P. Names of Ms Nasreen Jalil, a deputy convener of the MQM-P’s coordination committee; senior deputy convener Amir Khan; deputy convener and former Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar; MNA Kishwar Zehra and businessman Amir Chishti had been forwarded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for consideration for Sindh governor slot.

When appointed, Nasreen Jalil would be the first woman in nearly five decades to occupy the top office after Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan who had become the governor of Sindh in 1973 to 1975.

ITP intensify crackdown against CNG cylinder-fitted vehicles

ISLAMABAD:Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has taken special measures to ensure safety of lives and property of motorcyclists and other citizens and to keep them safe from any mishaps, according to a statement issued by the PRO to Islamabad Traffic Police here on Sunday. It has been decided to intensify legal action more strict and effective against the vehicles without fitness certificates and gas fitted cylinder public service vehicles, in order to reduce accidents as much as possible and keep traffic flow smooth.

SSP Traffic Rai Mazhar Iqbal has strictly directly in-charges of all zones to take strict legal action and imposed heavy fines against vehicles without fitness certificates and gas fitted cylinders public service vehicles. He also directed them to locked the illegals Vehicles at police stations and no concessions should be made in this regard.

He also said that special enforcement teams from Islamabad Traffic Police have been formed to take effective and intensify action against vehicles without fitness certificates and gas fitted cylinders public service vehicles at lorry depots, bus stops, wagon stops and various places in the jurisdiction of Federal Capital.

On this occasion, SSP Traffic said that safety of life and property of the citizens and providing all possible transport facilities are the foremost priorities of Islamabad Traffic Police, strict legal action will be taken against those violating traffic rules and affecting the flow of traffic in order to reduce accidents as much as possible and keep traffic flow smooth.

Renowned scholar Haqqani dies in accident

PESHAWAR:Renowned religious scholar of Nowshera Mufti Sardar Ali Haqqani alias Toju died in a road accident near Adamkhel Pass on Sunday.

Six other people, including Mufti Ali Haqqani’s driver and guard, were also injured in the accident. An officer of Pakistan Army and his two daughters were among the injured, who were shifted to CMH while other wounded people were taken to a nearby hospital.

Haqqani’s body arrived at his ancestral village in Nowshera in an ambulance amid mourning atmosphere. It may be noted that an assassination attempt on Mufti Ali Haqqani had been made in Swabi in the past.

Aleem Khan-led committee to review facilities at Punjab jails

LAHORE:Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz has set up a committee to be led by PTI rebel leader Aleem Khan to bring about betterment in the prison system, according to a report on Sunday.

The committee comprised of Khawaja Salman Rafique, Ayesha Nawaz and Aneeza Fatima. The other members of the committee are Syed Ali Raza Shah, former IG Prisons Farooq Nazeer, Osama Khawar, Ahad Fatima Bukhari, Madiha Talal Mery James Gill and superintendent of Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The panel will review the facilities being given to the prisoners in jails and will submit its proposals to improve these facilities. The committee will submit a report in this regard to Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz on May 16.

Dharejo demands water for Sindh as per 1991 accord

KARACHI:Provincial Minister for Industries and Commerce and Cooperative Department Jam Ikramullah Dharejo in a statement on Sunday expressed concern over the acute water shortage in Sindh and said that Sindh province was facing severe canal water shortage.

Under the 1991 Water Accord, Sindh should be given its due share of water immediately, Dharejo urged. He said in this regard, a meeting of the competent body of canal water Irsa should be convened without any delay so that the water agreement could be implemented in letter and spirit.

The minister said that the BS Feeder canal from Guddu Barrage on the Indus River had been closed due to which farmers in most of the districts of Sindh were facing severe difficulties and distress. Farmers would face severe crises and may face food shortages, so implementation of the 1991 agreement is a matter of time.

Dharejo said that in the past, injustice was committed against Sindh on the water issue. Now a just solution should be found to the problem and the grievances of the people of Sindh province be redressed, he concluded.
