Man his son gunned down in Lahore

LAHORE: A man shot dead his uncle and cousin in Shadbagh area of Lahore on Wednesday.

According to the police, Adnan opened fire on 50-year-old Khizar and his 22-year-old son Hamza in Shadbagh area of Lahore. As a result, they suffered severe bullet injuries and died.

The police rushed to the scene on information. Their bodies were shifted to a local hospital for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the heirs. A mourning atmosphere prevailed in the locality.

Operations Wing spokesman said a heavy contingent of police reached the crime scene and started further probe into it. Taking notice of the incident, DIG Operations Dr. Abid Khan has ordered the SP City to ensure immediate arrest of the culprit. “The victim family will be provide justice,” he expressed the resolve.

Direct Reduction of Iron Plant at Port Qasim on cards

KARACHI: Special Assistant to CM Sindh on Investment Department and Public Private Partnership Projects Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar said on Wednesday that establishment of Direct Reduction of Iron Plant at Port Qasim will open new doors of investment in this sector and Sindh Government has taken many initiatives to bring more investors to motivate them to set up their plants in Special Economic Zones in Sindh. This he said while talking to a delegation of Tuwaiqi Steel Mills here on Wednesday in his office.

The delegation was led by Zaigham Adil Rizvi, Director Projects. On this occasion, CEO SEZMC Abdul Aziz Uqaili was also present. In the meeting, Zaigham Adil Rizvi shared an update on Pakistan’s first state-of-the-art Direct Reduction of Iron Plant to be set up at Port Qasim. He said that the project was expected to bring in an investment of more than USD 300 million.

Addressing the delegation, Qamar assured them his full support in establishing the plant and said that Sindh government was fully cooperating with local and foreign investors in setting up various industrial units in Special Economic Zones of Sindh which had been designed to boost up economic activities in the province.

NWSM’s efforts in medical field appreciated

PESHAWAR: Chairman Board of Governance Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar and Chairman Policy Board Dr Nousherwan Burki visited Northwest School of Medicine (NWSM) on Wednesday.

Principal NWSM Prof Dr Noor ul Iman gave a brief presentation about the institute. Chairman Prof Dr Tariq Khan, Vice Principal Lt Col (r) Dr Muhammad Bakhtiyar and other faculty members were present on this occasion.

Dr Noor ul Iman briefed him about the Northwest General Hospital Project I and II, NWSM and Northwest Institute of Health Sciences’ present facilities provided to medical students. On the other side he explained about the infrastructure of the institute in detail.

Dr Nousherwan Burki appreciated the efforts of institutions in medical field and talked about the future development plans also, which included the issues and their solutions faced by doctors and students related to the health profession.

He also brought the upgrading of NWSM to a Medical university under concentration. At the end he praised the faculty of NWSM and appreciated their efforts to provide best facilitation to medical students in both practical and academic fields.

US Dollar hits all time high at Rs190.02

KARACHI: Amid ongoing uncertainty in the country, Pakistani Rupee continued to slump against US Dollar in the interbank market.

The dollar closed at 190.02 when compared to the previous day’s close of 188.66 and the local currency depreciated Rs1.36 on the back of weak macros including higher import bill along with delay in the IMF tranche. US Dollar since the arrival of new government up by Rs 7.07 and on April 11 was at Rs 182.93.

In addition, the start of fiscal year up by Rs 32.48 Increase in dollar added pressure on debts by Rs 4200 billion. Meanwhile, Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) also witnessed a bearish trend as KSE-100 index full by over 600 points in intraday trade and fell below 43,000 mark.

PFA discards 380 litres of substandard juices

LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) on Wednesday disposed of 380 litre substandard juices during a raid on a beverages factory on Jaranwala Road.

The enforcement team of the department imposed fine on a beverages factory over adulteration and counterfeit. PFA Director General Shoaib Khan Jadoon said that the food authority has taken action against the food business operator (FBO) for filling inferior quality juice in the low-grade packaging.

He added that the authority also witnessed the abundance of cockroaches, lizards and flies in the production area during the raid. Apart from that, workers of the factory did not have medical certificates.

The director general directed food business operators to use food-graded material for packaging keeping in view the principles of hygiene. PFA had been ensuring the implementation of a uniform policy for food industry from day first without any discrimination, he added.

PMA issues health protection alert amid heatwave

KARACHI: Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Secretary General Dr SM Qaisar Sajjad on Wednesday issued health alert to protect people from ongoing heatwave in the country.

In a statement, PMA Secretary General said that as per Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) alert, heatwave was likely to grip the Province of Sind from 11-16 May during which the maximum day temperature in Karachi might rise to 40°C and more whereas the maximum temperatures in Dadu, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Naushero Feroz, Khairpur, Shikarpur and Ghotki districts could also rise to 46 to 48 °C.

PMA leader Dr Qaisar advised the public to adopt the following preventive measures to protect themselves from heatwave. Avoid going out unnecessarily during the day from 11:00am to 4:00pm. If it is necessary to go out, then go through the shady way and make it sure that you don’t stay longer in sunlight. It further said that if you go out, cover your head with cap or wet cloth. Do not go out barefoot instead wear light shoes. Do not play any game in an open area in sun.

He further instructed: “Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Children and old people should be more careful during Heatwave, because of low immunity they can suffer more. Always eat light and fresh home-cooked meals. Preferably eat vegetables, pulses, fruits, milk etc. If it is unavoidable to go out, then drink more water or home-made solutions. Drink 15 -20 glass of water/ liquids.”

The PMA secretary general says always use boiled water to avoid water-born diseases like cholera, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, typhoid, hepatitis A and E etc. Government should strictly manage to avoid load-shedding during these days and also make sure the continuously supply of water.

He said: “Save water. Do not waste it in washing cars or any other vehicles, floor, gardening etc. to avoid water shortage during heat wave. Public and private organizations should establish drinking water and first-aid stalls at public places and road sides.”

The PMA leader advises that in symptoms of heatstroke, make it sure that the affected person breath well, give him / her clean drinking water but in case of unconsciousness, do not put water or any edible into the mouth. Cool the person’s entire body by sponging or spraying cold water. Monitor the pulse and blood pressure of the patient and shift the patient to hospital urgently, he further advises.

Khan’s strategy targeting institutions is dangerous: Marri

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party-Parliamentarian’s Information Secretary and Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security Shazia Atta Marri said Wednesday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan’s strategy that targets institutions is dangerous for the country.

Pakistan Peoples Party did not support any policy of targeting institutions of Pakistan when were in the opposition and even is not supporting now while being part of the government, she expressed in a reaction over Imran Khan’s statement.

Marri said that PTI chief Imran Khan was using his opposition as a weapon to gain support from the national institutions. Ms Marri said that Imran Khan had right to engage politics openly in Sindh province and we were not among the political revenge takers. Marri further said that Imran Khan would not achieve any success by promoting incitement, hatred and prejudice in the country.
