MESSAGE BY CHIEF SECRETARY BALOCHISTAN ON WORLD POPULATION DAY

QUETTA:Chief Secretary Balochistan, Abdul Aziz Uqaili, with reference to the World Population Day celebrated on July11, 2023, said that Improved reproductive health and family planning hold great potential for improving health indicators in Balochistan. The largest province of Pakistan faces numerous challenges related to healthcare, including high maternal and infant mortality rates, limited access to quality healthcare services, and low contraceptive prevalence. By prioritizing reproductive health and family planning interventions, Balochistan can make significant strides towards improving health outcomes for its population.

Firstly, investing in reproductive health services will help address the high maternal and infant mortality rates in the province. By ensuring access to skilled antenatal care, safe delivery services, and postnatal care, the health and survival rates of mothers and newborns can be significantly improved. This can be achieved through the establishment and strengthening of healthcare facilities, training healthcare providers, and promoting community-based initiatives.

Additionally, family planning plays a crucial role in reducing unintended pregnancies and the associated risks. By expanding access to a wide range of contraceptive methods and promoting their use, individuals and couples can make informed choices about family size and birth spacing. This not only improves maternal health but also contributes to healthier pregnancies, reduces the strain on healthcare facilities, and enhances child health outcomes.

Addressing the cultural and social barriers to reproductive health and family planning is also crucial. Balochistan's diverse cultural context and conservative norms may influence attitudes towards reproductive health services and contraceptive use. By engaging community leaders, religious scholars, and local influencers, it is possible to challenge misconceptions, dispel myths, and foster a supportive environment for reproductive health and family planning. Community-based initiatives and awareness campaigns can play a vital role in breaking down barriers and promoting acceptance.

The Chief Secretary, further said that improving the availability and accessibility of reproductive health services and family planning methods is paramount. This includes establishing and adequately equipping healthcare facilities, training healthcare providers, and ensuring the availability of a wide range of contraceptives. Community outreach programs, mobile clinics, and telemedicine initiatives can also help overcome geographical and logistical barriers, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
