Departmental promotion committee meeting should be convened: Karachi mayor

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated on Tuesday that meeting of the departmental promotion committee for all employees and officers of all grades should be convened, and proceedings regarding promotions be made without discrimination or bias. Departments that can be merged with others should be identified.

All officers should work diligently and passionately for the betterment and development of their organization. Capable, hardworking, and talented officers will be appointed in the departments of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to improve its performance. The performance of officers awaiting posting in KMC is being assessed. He said this during a meeting on Tuesday at his office, which was attended by departmental heads, directors, additional directors, and officers awaiting appointments from grades 18 to 20. Municipal Commissioner S.M Afzal Zaidi was also present in the meeting.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab emphasized that the purpose of convening the officers’ meeting was to enhance the overall performance of the KMC and to provide the citizens of Karachi with the best possible facilities through effective local government services.

The departmental heads and other officers of the KMC are responsible for improving the performance of their departments and ensuring the prompt and effective implementation of policies made for the greater good of the city. This goal can only be achieved if the relevant department’s officials not only have the abilities for their positions but also carry out their duties with sincerity, hard work, and honesty, while maintaining constant communication with higher authorities, which will help in uninterrupted development in the city. He inquired about the reasons for the posting delays of the officers’ awaiting posting and asked them to share their performance and notable work from their previous postings so that a complete assessment could be made for utilizing their services within the organization.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab stressed the need for transparency in the promotion matters of KMC employees, stating that the departmental promotion committee should ensure that no officer or other employees are deprived of their rights, and all actions should be based on merit according to established rules and regulations. He mentioned that several measures are being considered to make the administrative structure of KMC more efficient and functional, and therefore departmental heads should provide suggestions for this purpose so that changes in the administrative structure can be made accordingly. Merging inactive KMC departments with other departments will significantly enhance performance, and the skills of the merged department staff can be better utilized to meet the workforce needs of other departments.

Wahab expressed hope during the meeting that all officers of the KMC will fulfill their responsibilities effectively and help restore public trust in the organization. As the central local government body of the city, KMC is striving to perform its responsibilities effectively at all levels and is taking actions for the development and improvement of the city in collaboration with other civic institutions, yielding positive results. Our utmost effort is to continue these tasks with even greater speed and improved quality.
