Pakistan, WHO Renew Commitment to Eradicate Polio Amidst World Immunization Week

Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard millions of lives through vital vaccinations during World Immunization Week, which takes place annually from 24 to 30 April. This initiative underscores the nation’s dedication to shielding its populace from diseases that can be prevented through immunization.

Since the inception of the Expanded Programme on Immunization in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1978, Pakistan has successfully administered vaccines to millions, enhancing the health of its citizens. Notably, over 7 million children receive routine immunizations annually, with an additional 45 million children reached through supplementary polio vaccination efforts. Globally, vaccines have preserved the lives of 154 million individuals over the past five decades.

Under the global theme “Immunization for All is Humanly Possible,” the Federal Directorate of Immunization (FDI), alongside provincial health bodies, WHO, UNICEF, and other partners, is spearheading awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to highlight the monumental role of vaccines in advancing human health.

Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal emphasized the urgency of expanding immunization coverage, particularly against polio, as Pakistan remains one of the few countries still grappling with the virus. The Minister expressed a strong commitment, under Prime Ministerial guidance, to eradicate polio and appealed to community leaders to contribute actively to this cause.

Dr. Shabana Saleem, Director General of the FDI, emphasized that vaccination is a strategic investment in the nation’s future, ensuring that everyone, irrespective of their circumstances, receives essential vaccines.

WHO’s Representative in Pakistan, Dr. Luo Dapeng, reiterated the organization’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s immunization initiatives, recognizing the partnership since 1948. Dr. Dapeng highlighted the safety and efficacy of vaccines, advocating for universal access to these lifesaving interventions as a foundation for Pakistan’s prosperous future.

This concerted effort by Pakistan and international allies aims to protect its youngest citizens, reinforcing that reaching every child with vaccines is both a moral imperative and a strategic investment for the nation’s future.
