Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal announced that Pakistan contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet faces a severe climate crisis. He urged developed countries to demonstrate greater responsibility in this matter. Addressing the “Practical Steps for Environmental Protection” conference in Islamabad, Minister Iqbal highlighted the growing environmental threats facing the country.
He emphasized the rapid melting of Pakistan’s glaciers, posing a serious threat to the Indus River system and the country’s agricultural output. Iqbal stated that climate change is a major threat and demanded the fulfillment of global financial commitments.
The minister stressed that the annual $100 billion pledged for climate action is the right of affected countries, not charity. He urged the Global North to increase its efforts for climate justice, emphasizing that Pakistan is at great risk despite its negligible contribution to the problem.
