Environmental News – Denmark Finances Faisalabad Wastewater Treatment Plant In Renewed Partnership With Pakistan

Pakistan and Denmark have revitalized their development partnership with the signing of a significant loan agreement for a wastewater treatment facility in Faisalabad.

According to an official information today, the agreement, facilitated by Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) and Danske Bank, marks Denmark’s first development sector investment in Pakistan after a considerable pause and the inaugural project under the 2022 Pakistan-Denmark Framework Agreement.

The concessional loan will fund the construction of the Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant, a crucial infrastructure project designed to improve sanitation and public health in Faisalabad. This initial phase of the project, with a capacity of 33 million gallons per day (MGD), underscores Pakistan”s commitment to sustainable urban development and environmental protection.

The initiative signals a renewed focus on collaboration between the two nations, addressing critical urban challenges through enhanced wastewater treatment capabilities and promoting resilient infrastructure. The agreement was signed by Mr. Muhammad Humair Karim, Secretary, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ms. Tina Kullerup Hausen, Managing Director, DSIF, and Mr. Jesper B. Petterson, Managing Director, Danske Bank.
