Karachi Mayor Accuses Federal Govt of Neglecting Nation’s Economic Hub

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday criticised the federal government for a lack of practical support for the city, stating that the nation’s primary foreign exchange earner is not receiving its rightful share.

The remarks were made while speaking to the media after a commemorative visit to Mazar-e-Quaid on the 149th birth anniversary of Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

He expressed regret that despite repeated demands, Karachi has not received adequate funding from the central government. The mayor pointed out that even the city’s traders, who he described as the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, are awaiting federal development grants that have not been provided.

Mr Wahab highlighted that development grants for the metropolis are currently being furnished by the Sindh government. He announced that the Chief Minister of Sindh has approved a development package exceeding Rs 9 billion for Karachi’s industrial zones, with a meeting already conducted on the matter.

He assured that the funds would be utilised with complete transparency over the next six months to improve basic facilities in the industrial areas. The mayor declared the current year as one dedicated to development, affirming that all available resources are being used to better serve the city.

In response to a query, the mayor stated his willingness to align with any political party that is sincere about the welfare of Karachi and Sindh and can effectively advocate for the city”s case at the federal level.

The mayor”s statements followed a ceremony at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to mark the founder’s 149th birth anniversary. On behalf of the citizens, he laid a floral wreath and offered Fateha to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation.

Accompanying the mayor were KMC City Council Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan, and other elected officials.

In his tribute, Mayor Wahab described the date as a historic day, reminding the nation of the founder”s vision and tireless struggle that led to the creation of Pakistan. He emphasised that following the Quaid”s guiding principles of wisdom, perseverance, and foresight is essential for the country”s development and prosperity.

The mayor also noted the day”s significance as Christmas, extending greetings to the Christian community. He remarked that the day conveys a message of interfaith harmony, love, and tolerance, adding, ‘we are equal partners in their happiness.’

He concluded with a prayer for universal happiness and for the ability to prioritise humanity, serve the public, and promote peace and brotherhood in society.
